I've seen a slew of Youtube vids about upgrading the 2.5" hard drive in the PS3, but they all seem to go with a 100Gb or a 120Gb.

Is there any problem in the PS3 o/s seeing a 500GB drive? If I upgrade the thing tomorrow, I'm going to at least make it worthwhile, but I'd hate for the o/s not to be able to recognize a larger drive like that.

I dont think there is any limit...i know people who have up to 320gb drives in their consoles, and have heard of people putting 500gb drives in them.

500 is the biggest Iv seen. Around $140 or so on newegg or tiger direct. Game pro did a test on the 5400rpm VS 7200rpm drives and they were pretty much the same speed wise.

PS3...it only does everything(that Sony allows it to)

I just pulled the trigger on a 320gb myself for $75 free shipping through amazon. It's a Western Digital Scorpio 320 GB 2.5-inch Bulk/OEM Hard Drive WD3200BEVT. I even got a case so I can use the 80gb from my ps3 as a portable HD. (the case shown in the pairing on the harddrive page). Reviews seem good for it so I'm excited.

I was reading around in a forum a couple days ago, and a guy was going to attempt to see if his PS3 would recognize a 1TB HDD. However, I didn't know they made 1TB drives that are 2.5"

Talk about memory....

I read somewhere that 750 works, but that is the highest I've seen it.

He likely just used a 3.5 hdd and kept the hdd outside of the case, I've seen a few people do it before but it do sent seem like it would be convenient not to mention a bit sketchy.

If it's just a regular SATA connection inside, the PS3 has no idea if it's a 2.5 internal or 3.5" external so they should work just the same. You'd get a nice speed increase running a 7200rpm 3.5 but yah - not too convenient for people (like me) that would like a nice clean looking unit all contained in a single housing. A lot cheaper though if you're adding a big drive.

For those who've opened up their PS3s already (or replaced the HDD, either or), would you say that it's even possible to "make room" for a 3.5" HDD? Like shave off some metal here, get rid of some plastic there, place a 3.5" HDD here, close it up, and nothing looks amiss?

'Cuz to be honest, I've been thinking of doing just that. :/

Nar your wouldn't be able to fit one in there. Your only option is to have it sitting outside if its a 3.5" .

There isn't enough room on the inside for a 3.5 inch...plus you would have to build a custom caddy.

As far as I know, as long as it is a 2.5 inch SATA that runs at least 5400 RPM, there is no limit. The only issues that I've heard is that some of the early larger (500GB+) HDD's were actually "physically" larger than other HDD's...and some were having trouble getting them to fit into the caddys. But that was awhile ago...

You could probably put a 3.5 he into the bd bay
Obiously you would loose your bd
But I am unclear why the ps3 he should be upgraded if you have a network
Shouldn't you put in a nas and save to the nas or is that not possible

The other option is external hd enclosure but I wish they had 1 USB port on the back of the ps3

Will a USB splitter work on the PS3 like any other USB device? I'm guessing USB is USB no matter what platform it's on, and should accept up to 128 devices... I'd like to have my controller, wireless keyboard/mouse, and external drives hooked up. (I know I'm off topic a bit here)

I dont see why it wouldn't. USB are USB (Universal Serial Bus), The Wii splits the USB port with Rock band.

Once again, wouldnt this be nice if they were at the back and hidden

I wouldn't go as far as saying 128 devices, because if the usb hub does not have it's own external power source (plug into the wall) devices you plug in may draw power from the USB port. If the USB port cannot supply the power needed for a number of devices, you will not be able to use the hub. And USB ports can only support 5v, right? I can't remember. So if you wanted to, you could find out the power consumption and try to figure out if it will work, blah blah blah... Bottom line, depending on what you want to connect, there are power issues to consider. For example, I have 4 2.5" external enclosures with 140GB HDD's in them. They are USB powered. Although I haven't tried it, I don't think I would be able to connect them all to the same port through a hub. Maybe if they were all externally powered.

Something I've been wanting to try is to use a USB hub for three more controllers. I have PS2 USB adapters and Logitech PS2 wireless controllers that work on my PS3. Never got around to it though.

Good point on overloading the USB for power, I am not an electrical guy but I imagine you could run into power supply problems if you draw too much from your USB ports for too long a period.

Well, even beyond the USB ports, you'd be drawing more power from the PS3's power supply, which means the power supply would have to draw more energy from the wall, which means it would produce a lot... maybe not a LOT, but certainly more heat, which means it'd have a higher chance of overheating.

Not that it should be much of a problem, but just sayin'.

Yeah a splitter will work, how many devices it will support up to idk. And I agree that it would have been nice to have most or at least a few usb slots in the back, there's an intercooler that does that but I don't want to put one of those on my ps3 and end up stressing out the fan.

The built in router, and the dual hdmi slots like the prototype would have been sick too.

Here's a pic of the prototype:

At this present time, the largest capacity 2.5" HDD for the PS3 is 500GB.

As others have said you can get a 3.5" drive and have it sit outside the PS3,Xecutor made a device for such thing,it would be an eyesore but at least you would have a lot more space for a cheaper price.

Can the PS3 install games to an external device? If so, I'm thinking the best solution for people who want big storage is just grab a big external USB 3.5" drive.

It can,if connected to the internal SATA connection.
This can be used http://www.consolesource.com/ecomm/catal...der-p-2593.html or you could just make your own.

Yes but notice I said "USB" :) :) I'm sure any device hooked up to its internal SATA port will be considered by the PS3 as the primary storage device. It's too bad the PS3 doesn't have an external SATA port :(

You cant hook USB up to the internal SATA port, just get a normal non USB 3.5" HDD and connect it to the internal sata conection.

Hehe, I think you're missing our conversation - we were saying that external 3.5" drives via SATA looks a bit 'unclean'. That's why I asked if it was possible to use a external USB drive for primary storage (for installing games/demos/saved games/etc...)

I've never had one hooked up when I've installed stuff so I don't know if it sees the external device and asks you if you want to install to that location instead.
