Ive been working on my xbox to soft mod it for the past five days and have had various setbacks eg, tools, false software etc.., but i cannot get the pc to recognise the xbox drive.
I was given my xbox as a present and unfortunately it was NTSC-J, since i live in the uk i was unable to play PAL games which as u can imagine is a pain in the arse.
I have tried to interface with my powerful vista ultimate computer as well as a slightly less powerful xp media centre edition, both unsuccessful, i have also trawled through every site i can find and tried everything.
I have tried Slax 2.1 but my pc's wont boot from it, i have also tried the cross wire trick and managed to get the centre light to flash but as soon as i open or close the tray it stops flashing which i take to be a sign that it is not in mode b.
My xbox is an arcade and the drive is a hitachi 79fl and my sata chipsets are compatible, please if anyone can help im desperate.
my end purpose is to upload modded firmware which will allow me to play PALNTSC and NTSC-J as well as all dvd region codes. this is the url for the guide i was following [url=http://biline.ca/360_mod.htm][/url] i also used several other guides but i dont have them saved on my pc.

thats really weird coz i did a lot of searching and the majority of sites i found said that essentially i was making my console 'region free' and by making backups of the PAL games i would be able to play them on my modded xbox

well those sites dont know what they are talking about as flashing your console doesnt make it region free.

The only way you can change the region of your console is by modifying the nand firmware,not the dvd drive firmware.I might have mentioned this on here before,but everything essentially important is stored in the nand firmware not the dvd drive firmware.
Nand Firmware:
Region Code Dvd Key
Console ID
hidden dev features
etc...
If you manage to obtain and extract the nand firmware from your console you can modify the region code.The dvd drive firmware doesn't change the console region code as guessswho & wabashman mentioned.
