Reading the "Hacking the Xbox360 for Noobs 2008", it tells me for the benq drive, that once the firmware has been erased DO NOT press 'any key' while it is off otherwise it will freeze at batch0.
What my question is, does this need to be done with the new iprep version, or should i just follow the advice and leave it ON during this step?
If anyone has gotten the iprep v008.6 working can you tell me?

And one more newbie question, does iprep back-up your original firmware, just incase the thing decides to freeze?

Bump, I would also like to know this.
Additionally, should we be following all the same instructions in the 2008 for noobs guide for the BENQ section? Except of course using the Liteon firmware file "ixtreme_1.5.rar"

Is there anything else which is different?

just follow the same instructions, except obviously use the 1.5 firmware. If you are nervous, then just download the v006 of iprep and follow the tut exactly. It's what I would do

I would advise against that ^
After more reading it seems that you need:

1. A connectivity kit hooked up (not sure what this does exactly, but I think you hook to your PC's com port and the power to the lite-on drive)
2. To solder (or connect the pins somehow) some pins that allow for writing to the flash

Here is where i found some info, some of these guys on this site are the developers of these hacks:

I am still looking for a guide explaining what the connectivity kit is, how it works, and how to connect the pins for writing to flash.

damnit, my bad. For some reason, I had thought you said you had a benq drive, and I didn't really read the title or so.

Definitely don't follow that tutorial.

Follow the tutorial for flashing and flash it with jungleflasher. That's the best app for flashing the liteon.

You must mean this tutorial:
http://team-xecuter.com/ck3/liteon_windows.htm

I must say this one seems to have the most information. I think I am going to follow this myself after purchasing the lite connectivity kit and probe.

Does anyone know if there is some special grounding you should do between the devices

i.e. connect things together with alligator clips for safe measure, I read that one user touched the probe and sparks flew damaging his drive.

simplest way to flash a benq....download Dosflash beta 1.3 and use dosflash commands to do it all

IE

read: dosflash r (sata port number nforce 4 chipset it is "09F0") 1 a0 1 4 c:\orig.bin

erase: dosflash e 09F0 1 a0 4 d8 0

write: dosflash w 09F0 1 a0 4 c:\ix15.bin 0

09F0 is port number for Nforce 4 sata obviously you will need to use whatever port number your drive is connected to.

all c:\ locations are this because I use a flash thumb drive and run iprep on it to make it bootable then copy over dosflash 16 app into the thumb drive.

Iprep makes it bootable and from the command promp once iprep is loaded just simply ignore iprep commands and use dosflash. iprep all versions never would work for me, this has worked tho for over 10 benq drives.
