the patient is a feb08 falcon. the original problem was 1RROD E74, with secondary error 1022. did the xclamp fix and it fired back up again. worked for half an hour, then the graphics started to go haywire and it threw the 1RROD E74 again.

let the system cool off, then redid the screws and thermal paste again. didn't tighten it as much as the first time. system works once again, but now the fans will not spin. i did try another set of fans, with led, and no go.

with the first xclamp fix, the fans were still running. but now, it seems like the power to the connector is shot. the header is still intact. power brick is not the culprit, as our own 360 works perfectly.

anyone else have the same or similar problems with the fan header?

traces are intact. and the fans still work; tried them on batteries, and both still work.

but there is a white substance that won't come off. it was there when i disassembled it. tried to clean it off with isopropyl, but it won't come off.

Real good advice there, guy. Actually, I wonder, could you just splice into the power line for the fan and mate it to the power for the dvd somehow?

idea struck me; test the power of the header. tested it with a led.

the header still works, but for a split second. either it's a loose connection, a short, or something is damaged.

Well i just caused the same problem you have. The problem is that i accidently shorted the fan header with my multimeter and now the pos sides are only kicking out about 3.3v which isn't enough to start to spin the fans. If i blow on the fans or just touch them they'll begin to spin. For the time being i used a 3pin to 4 pin adaptor and wired the fans for 12v using only the ground from the fan connector. Anybody have any ideas how i could get 5v back at the pin header or what exactly happened when i shorted the connection?
