i was giving a 120 7200rpm hdd. I heard that you can only use 5400 is it dangerous or bad for the ps3 if you use a 7200rpm version?

7200 rpm drives are supposed to be faster, but they also produce more heat.

The thing is that folks have tested it and the HDD access times barely decreased and the heat produced barely increased. So... from what I can see, it doesn't matter whether you use it or not. If you've got a whole bunch of things sucking power from your PS3, though (like a USB George Foreman grill or something... I kid you not), the heat increase might just be what does it in.

But it should do you just as well as a 5400 rpm drive. There doesn't seem to be any major differences between the two rpm's aside from the number.

You'll have to get it all onto an external memory source. One way is to buy an enclosure for your old hard drive and connect it to your PS3 via USB cable. The other way is simply to copy all your files onto a flash drive or something, assuming that they're all less than 4GB in size.
