Is there any hardware for the xbox 360 that is an adapter for the plug on the top of the xbox where the hdd plugs in so that one could say use a usb drive instead of buying a very expensive and not so userfriendly official xbox 360 hdd

I don't think there's such a device yet, but if storage and organization are the issues, I know several people (myself too) who use the hdd just for game data, etc, and any other media like music we keep on an ordinary usb external drive. Keeps storage and organization a hell of a lot simpler.

the following is speculation, opinion, and personal experiences:

I don't believe there is an adaptor to go from a flash drive to a male xbox360 hdd connector. Although, it would not be that difficult to make. The problem would be that it wouldn't work. The hdd is using a variation of the Sata protocol and a flash drive typically uses USB. The significant difference is Sata has two pairs of communication wires and USB has one pair of communication wires. If you were to create an adaptor your very next obstacle would be to get the USB flash drive to "appear" as a sata hdd to the xbox360. That can also be done but may prove difficult. There is adaptors for you to hook your 360 hdd to your pc, such as the miniSpy by team executer but that adapter is totally uneccessary as the drive inside the xbox plastic housing is nothing more than a regular 2.5" sata drive. The only thing that makes it stand out from any other sata 2.5" drive is the special partitions and files that microsoft puts on it for security and functionality. If "expense" is your obstacle then you can consider buying a 120gb OEM drive at a computer parts store and partition it properly and then add the ss.bin for a similar drive and your all set. Find out what the best price you can find a 120gb hard drive for the 360 and I will beat that price by 10% if you are interested.

omg. wow. thats the best post i have ever read. very technical. thx for the offer, but unfortunatley i live in africa. lulz. i really apreciate ur reply and has helped me emensely in the understanding of how all this expensive gadgetry works.

is there a possible hack that runs games off an hdd. im really worried about my discs and xbox dvd drive...i do hve the firmware hack for the benq for playing my backups but it seems i am forced to play my origionals because the backups create alot more heat than the origionals

Not intending to threadjack here, but a question for ya, BD. Is it then possible to take most any SATA laptop HDD and ghost a 360 drive onto it? for instance, If I take my stock 20GB out of the enclosure and ghost it onto a 150 pulled from a dead laptop?

opops, forgot to add that I know the 360 will only recognize up to 120GB anyway. I work in a pc repair shop and can get salvaged parts pretty much free and I'm looking at a 150 right now.

Icey... you can save your games to the hdd and play them from the hdd if you are running the latest dashboard, commonly called NXE. No hack needed. You will still have to put a retail or backup copy of the game you want to play in the drive so the xbox can verify and then all game play and save data will be performed on your hdd. I have done this with Rainbow6, COD5, GOW2, etc, DO NOT DO IT WITH HALO3.
McMutt.....yes,and no, sort of... you can ghost the 150( as long as it is a sata drive) with the 20g but there will still only be 20g of available space minus the space for the microsoft hocus pocus, so you would essentially be wasting your larger drive. OH WAIT HOLD ON A SECOND, you have to use a similiar drive... the 120gb scorpio BEVS will work, I think. (When I get home I will get the details of what drives and part numbers will work for you, or you can search for "hard drive hack" on this forum) what I suggest you do is get a compatible drive and hack it with a working ss.bin for a 120g drive. You will need some simple software to prepare a compatible drive to work with the 360. The software is found on autoxbins.
McMutt, ...... the hard drive hack is NOT something I developed but you may be a valuable resource. The guys who originally discovered the hdd hack said we "must use a certain p/n drive" etc. You said you worked in a computer store, with salavage drives. Maybe you and I could develop a new HDD hack based on information we obtain because you have access to several hard drives from different manufacturers. PM me if you are interested.
