Ok i got a failed to restore backup to the new ps3 hard drive. All I want to save is my game saves, themes, and my downloads like for little big planet from the psn (that is under game data correct?).

I am guessing nothing else needs to be saved correct? I dont have music nor videos. So I am thinking I can save all of those things str8 from the original hdd and shoot them over to an external. Then swap the original hdd with the new one and then the saved stuff from external to new hdd.

Is that a good idea or does that make no sense?

If you can do that then yeah do it. The backup utility only does that anyway as well as make note of your settings ad PSN account. After you restore the backup you have to reinstall the games anyway, those arent copied over.

WEll thats all that was copied when I did a backup and retored it on a larger hdd. So yeah if its possible to copy the saved games to a usb and create an account in the same name on the new hdd, then yeah the utility is a bit useless.

Strange...i thought it backed up your game data aswell?

When i tried to back up my data with an 8gb usb it said i needed like 30gb more space.
Anyway thumpy, you can re-download your psn games from the downloads list in the psn store, so if its just game saves and themes you want then you can just use a usb stick. games and game updates will have to be downloaded/installed again though.
