Questions about my year unused, Wii with WiiFree

So, it might be more than a year since I use my Wii. A few friends are coming over, so I've decided to dust off the old Wii and buy some new games. The problem is, I have an unknown version of WiiFree on a PIC 12F629 chip. I remember getting a game awhile back and it required me to update the system firmware on the Wii, but it didn't affect my WiiFree. Has any of the new updates render the WiiFree useless? Is there an update to WiiFree. A little while back, I heard another group replaced the WiiFree as the new open source mod. Any truth to that? Also, is there anything "cool" happening on the Wii for the last year or so?

No update to date has effected a modchip. But many games that have come out since super mario galaxy have featured a diskcheck that may require a modchip update.

If you can run super mario galaxy then you can update from and play any game you want so long as its from your wii's home region. If you cant run mario then you'll likely have to update the modchip or use one of the homebrew methods to skip the diskcheck.

same answer, just make sure the game isn't an import and is from your region
