We have tried over and over again to hook up 360 to our router..no luck. We even bought an updated linkseys router (N link) hooked ethernet cable to router..still no luck. If we hook it directly to the modem it works however then we lose access to our notebooks.
I have read about the wireless network adapters but will having one of those really make a difference if we can't get hooked up with the ethernet cable to our router?
Any feedback would greatly be appreciated..we have no idea what we are doing incorrectly and we promised our son we would get it working.
Thanks for response..notebook connected to ethernet works fine.
Can anyone walk us through hook up step by step. When we attempted to test the connection of xbx360 console to router it doesn't get past the first test...it acts like it's not connected via the ethernet cable..the help section says "make sure it's plugged in" (not too helpful..and yes it is plugged in)
Any suggestions at all..settings ..step by step help would be great. We have tried just about everything over the past two months..this is getting quite frustrating !
yea i would be frustrated too. you were doing it right, you just use an ethernet cable and run it from the xbox to the router. (plug in the cable on the router in slot one, or the first hole, if unsure which one the first one is try both ends.) if your laptop is working on the router, then the only thing i could suggest would be to unplug the power cord to the router and let it set for 10 seconds to reset itself. if that dosnt work you are going to do the same thing to the modem, unplug power for 10 secondds, but then after you plug it back in, do the router right after. then try to connect to xbox live through your router. you should be able to keep the xbox plugged into the router during this process, the only thing you should be unplugging is the power cords. if you dont get it, dont give up, we will do whatever we can to get you up and running.
u said the note books work but are u using wireless option? the only way to tell if the ethernet port that u are using for the 360 is good would be to disable the wireless option in ur notebook and then use the same ethernet cable u are using with the 360 to hook the notebook to the router . use the same cable and the same port that you are trying to use for the 360. if the notebook works fine then something weird is going on. if it doesnt work then most likely the router is set to only use the wireless option and u will need to configure the router to use the ethernet ports......linksys routers are a bitch to configure if they dont work right.
my bro in law got one a few years ago and we couldnt get it to work with his pc no matter what, but it would work with my pc. so in that case was his pc but still it shouldnt be that hard.
Your situation sucks. Double check your Cat 5 Cable to make sure you aren't accidentally using a cross-over version, which happens from time to time. Like stealth said use the same cable, same port. Another thing to try is hooking you xbox straight into your modem to make sure that there is no defect in you jack on you xbox. If your old router is a linksys somewhere in the ballpark of WRT54G than you can reflash the firmware to make it a wireless adapter. But I recommend starting with what works "your laptop" and slowly adding something to the mix to try and pin point your problem. if you have no luck, let us know.
