does a modhcip break the console because i have heard of bricking and overheating.

friend said if i get it chipped i should get an intercoller

Some chips do get warm when the console is off if you have wiiconnect24 on, but its not hot enough to overheat.

And semi-bricking the console is only caused when you run updates from out-of-region game disks.

Someone doing their own mod can break the console if they are doing one of the older soldering mods. This was a real issue with the old D2CKey where you're soldering 32 wires into your console. Too many people were trying to do it themselves and were lifting foils (open connection), cold solder (resistive connection), solder bridge (shorting connection), and over heating drive chips (ruin chip) are some of the problems which can break or temporarily break your console.

With the 5-6 Wire or better yet the new wireless mods this is much less an issue but if you are going to do your own mod and need to solder it yourself, it is best to have experience as SMT/SMD soldering is not easy for a novice to do and if you create a problem you may not be able to fix it with out help from a pro.

Mod chips themselves will never break your console even if N detects them, worst case you'll have to remove the modchip to play your original games.
