So this guy brings a 360 to my computer shop and begs me to take a look at it. I'm starting to do small console repairs, so I ask him what the story is. He claims to have found in in the trash (but has all cables and manuals with it, odd, huh?) and said a friend tore it apart to try and fix it. It's getting the "to play this disc..." and will play DVDs. Is there any way I can just read the key and/or firmware from windows to see if this genius screwed up while trying to flash it? I don't want to waste time trying to fix it if I can't even pull a valid key from the firmware, but I'd like to try reflashing it with a copy of original FW if I can, then move to replacing the drive if needed, but obviously can't even do that if the key's been screwed up byt a bad flash attempt.
I do have a VIA 6421 SATA card in the PS I want to use, but no way to boot from USB just yet. that's why I want to try and read it from windows before I waste any more time with it.

pretty sure to do that, you would have to boot into doc using iprep. If you can't boot from a usb, there are other methods.
need jtag help? Xbox 360 console repair? PM me or chat

Could he not just dump the FW with DOSFlash32 in windows and then open the FW with Maximus Firmware Toolbox to check the key?

I'm not sure if this helps, or if it just means I've overlooked a step, but Windows doesn't recognize that the drive is there. I have it connected to the primary SATA port on the card, the 360 is powered on, but even rebooting the PC doesn't make it detect the DVD drive.

It's not going to just show up under My Computer. You will need to use DOSflash32 and dump the firmware to your PC then look at the key.

I mean it doesn't show under anything in XP, not disk management, not the device manager, nothing.

The only one I have ever been able to get to show up in windows is the Hitachi 59DJ. All others never show up for me. I just recommend dumping the FW and looking at the key to see if maybe he just had a bad flash.

I see what you mean now. I'll try DosFlash32 like you recommended, and will probably use a floppy if I can't get that to work. Now where did I put that box o' drives?

Ok, so dosflash32 can see the drive, but has no info in the Flash Chip Properties section execpt "MTK Vendor intor failed" .when I try to read, it gives back an error "No known flash chip on this port" Does this mean it's just not compatible with this drive, or that the drive's flash chip is hosed?

If you are selecting the correct port in DOSflash then it sounds like the owner erased the drive. If he does not have the original FW or the key the 360 is useless. The best bet would be to ask him if he has the original FW. Was the seal broken when you got it?

Oh, you could say the seal was broken, he brought it to me in pieces, lol! Someone had already done the xclamp replacement on both chips too, so if he did find it in the trash, it's because the original owner hosed the drive and knew it was useless after that. I'll have to call him monday for more info, but it looks like all I'm making off of this "repair" is my minimum bench fee and maybe some spare parts. Thanks a million for the help!

There is always a chance that it was just a bad flash. I had one samsung MS28 that I had to flash twice. For some reason the first flash just did not take so I used the same hacked FW the second time and it took the second time.

Even if it was a bad flash, isn't the key now gone? I'm working under that assumption since dosflash32 couldn't even see the flash chip on the drive, but was able to identify the drive correctly.

More than likely they flashed it with the drive key that normally comes up in Iprep "777777777777777777" or "FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF" if this is the case then they are screwed. How ever I have had one flash with the correct key just not take and when I reflashed it the 360 started working fine. So if DOSflash32 can't pull the FW you might try iprep.

I haven't spoken with him yet, keep getting voicemail. I've set up a floppy and am going to try reading from DOS just to see if I can grab a key even if I have to write it down, lol.

Well I just keep running into problems left and right. I'm trying to make the bootdisc with iprep, and whether I use v 006 or the newest 008, the dropdown where you choose the target drive is empty. I've got a floppy installed (A:, of course) and I've even tried with a USB stick and it just won't populate that dropdown. any suggestions?

Sorry man I helped this dude from Canada until midnight flash his BenQ and it's now 5:34am and getting ready for work. All these drives/posts are running together. Have you tried DOSFlash32?

Anyway, I got over that hurdle only to hit yet another wall. Iprep detects the USB drive if I insert it after iprep is running, it sees the A drive then as well. Now, whichever I choose, I get an error that it can't find c:\program files\iprep101\tmp\filename the filename is Formatfolppy.cmd (If I set it to format) OR dSam.bat if I deselect the format option. If I have it use the USB, it just gives the missing dSam.bat error. I've checked in the program directory and there is no tmp folder at all.

Got it! I figured it probably wouldn't hurt if I manually created a \tmp\ directory in the iprep directory and it worked! iPrep deletes the tmp dire when it exits, so I wonder why it didnt creat it when it started?
