So what exactly is this software mod you can apply to your wii?
It enables a homebrew channel from where you can play backups?

Is it really that easy?
Or better stick with soldering a chip?

it really depends, the are a few homebrew backup loaders out there, however, i have not personally tried any of them as my wii has a wiikey. If you are a "cheap" person who doesnt want to spend money on a chip or getting it soldered, go with the softmod.

It is pointless to open up your Wii unless your into Gamecube games. Although the softmod scene should be coming out with a loader for that anytime now. If you just want the Wii to play Wii games, which is what most people do, softmod is all you need.

If you want less hassle and have the means a Modchip is the way to go.

Modchips have better game compatibility.
They are less vulnerable to Wii System updates.
They can run drive at max speed (no video lagging in Intro or cut scenes).
Has Gamecube compatibility.
Easy to install with WiiClip

Really the only plus a bootloader has over Modchip is the price.

Softmod is more hassle than opening up the wii and installing a mod chip?? How do you figure?? Softmod is easy and free. What more can you ask. 99% of games work fine with softmod. Once gamecube loader comes out, it will be perfect and purchase of a modchip would be a waste of good money.

Did I say a modchip install was easier then a softmod?

No I said a Modchip install is easy if you use a WiiClip. Have you ever taken apart the Wii? All it is are screws and 3 cables you need to unplug. Then put the WiiClip on drive chip and then reassemble.

The hassle comes with Wii System Updates. A softmod will be more venerable to Wii System updates then what a Modchip is.

A softmod isn't free. You need to buy a SD Card plus buy TP or rent it (or borrow it which would be free).

Then depending on the Wii firmware version will depend on how you install the backup launcher. If you have the OCT 23rd 3.3 update or 3.4 firmware you will need to fix the limitation that blocks WAD/cIOS from being installed.

Then you need to install the Homebrew Channel using TP hack.

Then you need to install the cIOS for the backup loader to even work.

A softmod isn't as easy as throwing the boot loader onto the SD Card and off you go. Fixing the limitation of firmware and installing all other applications can be just as confusing if not more confusing for users then installing a WiiClip would be.

If it was that easy then we wouldn't have the multiple threads started on a daily basis with users having issues installing the boot loader.

Oh and I would rather have 100% compatibility rather then 99% any day.

Larry is absolutely correct it is much easier these days to hard mod then soft mod your console and much less hassle down the road. It's not like the old days, only a year ago that is, were you had 32 wires to install and all sorts of possible problems to trouble shoot.

I was helping a lady on another forum who was instructed to soft mod her Wii and she was so confused and frustrated with the whole soft mod ordeal she was ready to give up. After discussing it with her she immediately decided to go wireless mod and is very happy after doing so.

Now the biggest problem everyone has is burning an ISO that works.

Hardmodding Wii is on life support. Gamecube loader comes out and the plug is coming out.

Total waste of money unless you play gamecube games. most people dont. Most people buy a wii to play wii games. Get zelda from gamestop...use and return for full refund....who doesn't have sd card?? If you have money to piss away get a modchip...who cares anyways...but if you have money to piss away....why you pirating games anyways?? HAHAHAHA

who says we're pirating games? you automatically assumed that we pirate games. what, just because we mod our systems automatically makes us pirates? wrong.

First if you are looking for a way to run "backups" Modchip is the better way to go (always is don't fucking start). If you just want it for homebrew then ... no need for a modchip :P.

Users use Modchips or bootloaders to play backups. I just happen to think a Modchip is still heeps better then a boot loader at this time.

I guess compatibility and venerability isn't important to you. Well it might make a difference to those just starting out. Plus I don't think there is much difference in difficulty between soft modding a system or hard modding it with a WiiClip.

I agree that modchip is the way to go, look at the number of posts on this forum and compare the number of people having problems with softmod vs. the number of people using modchips ONCE THEY ARE CORRECTLY INSTALLED.

I'd say 50:1 easily.

And you capitalize WOMAN why????

You assume people here are pirates then you post that statement? Use something and return - consumer fraud.
I'm not sure with gamestop but other stores will only do an even exchange for games not give a refund on ones opened.
