ok i cant boot from usb cause i am using some older dell desktops that do not support that option but i can use usb keyboard in pre windows environment/DOS.

Note: i am using the Ultimate boot cd for windows as my NTFSforDOS disc. i am using this cause i already had a copy of it and saw no point in burning a disc for only booting to NTFSforDOS

So i have been using iprep to prepare a HDD and using a NTFSforDOS cd to boot into NTFS for dos and then iprep is on the HDD and such. I flashed 4-5 units using this method and it was all good.

Untill this past weekend. I prepared my HDD with iprep and then booted to NTFSforDOS. It says u have to type "Yes: exactly to agree to the terms or whatever and if u just type "y" or anything else it will not mount the drives. So i am typing the "Yes" correctly and the drives should mount.

So i see the drives listed at the top like i should and i get to the A:\ prompt and i enter "cd C:" and it will do this:

A:\cd C:
C:\
A:\

so as u can see it will go into the C drive for only a split second and then switch back to the A:
I have never seen this before and i work with computers as my profession so its not like i am a newb.

now i have 2 of these old dell units so i thought maybe its just the pc. so i swapped the prepared HDD and boot disc to the other unit. same hardware so no need to go into os and do all that bs. I didnt however switch the VIA card over yet. i just wanted to see if i could access the drive via NTFSforDOS. It worked fine so i thought i was all good. I took my 360 apart to update to 1.5 and i switch the via card to the pc i am using now and i loaded everything and BAM it is doing the same shit again.

Does anyone have any idea whats going on here.
i did power up the pc and the 360 at the sametime with everything connected? is it possible having the 360 drive connected on boot could confuse it somehow? i did try booting without and no change.
i am thinking i should try to get a regular DOS disc and try thru that?

any help is great. Thanks

Sorry i forgot to add that i tried formatting the HDD completely and then preping with iprep but no luck.
also tried a completely different HDD and still the same.

also here is a quick question on iprep. If i prepare with iprep to flash a sammy and it works and i have another sammy to flash do i need to go back into windows and do the iprep setup again or is it safe to just use the same preped drive/usb to flash the next unit as long as it is the same drive type?

about the a; c; a: thing.... is your drive spinning up? or is it already spun up before you cd c:? were these dells used previously for this? if not sounds like the power supply is inadequate. it may be a remote possibility that when you cd c: that the ps cant spin up the drive and there for the drive becomes unavailable... you said this only happens when the sata card is in place? maybe the sata card is taking up your available output and depriving the hdd of power.

the iprep.. you do not need to redo iprep everytime. it makes you create a new folder for every drive.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes i had flashed about 3-5 different sammy drives with one of these dells using all the same hardware.

I am not sure if it is the VIA card cause before i experienced this problem i had booted into iprep and i did the dSam command to read firmware and it locked up. so i rebooted and went back in to start over and that is the first time i ever experienced this problem. So maybe something happened to my VIA card when it locked up.

I have noticed that the sata#1 connector on the via card is somewhat lose as when i plug in the sata cable i can see the solder points moving. but it was working like this before so i just figured even tho the point are lose it is still making connection. I am guessing i cannot use the second sata port on the via card for flashing?

you can use the second port but I don't think with iprep. if you put dos, dosflash, and firmtool in the same directory on your bootable drive you can just do it that way. then you can select the port. actually it might work with iprep but that configures it for the primary port. if your xbox drive is plugged into anything but the primary port you will get a message in dosflash that says " blah blah mkt vendor id failed if you would like to resend" choose no and then you should be able to choose the port your drive is on.

oh one last thing... if your sata card uses lead free solder then warming it to 220c will reseat those connections, far less temperature for leaded solder. look for a RohS sticker on it, that means lead free. If you do actually do that go very slow with your temperature as you don't want to ruin any capacitors. also hopefully there isn't too much plastic on your sata card cuz that might melt. If you can't afford a new sata card I could probally fix that one for you if the chipset isn't corrupt. I have a professional reflow and preheater set up....

alright i will try the dosflash instead of iprep. im sure it is simple but i havent tried it before so if u know any good tuts just to reference that would be cool. if not i can find them myself with a little time searching(oh wow)

ill have to check the card when i get home as i am at work now, but it is the syba via card from newegg.
i do not have a heat gun and i dont know if i trust a hair dryer to get that hot and then direct the heat to the specific area while not melting anything like you said.
its about time i learn to solder anyway...

so i tried again last night and it worked....this is either going to make me look like an idiot or i have some very weird luck or something...

I tried the NTFSforDOS method again but i took the VIA card out before trying. Also i noticed that the solder is not cracked/loosened like i thought it was. so i booted into NTFSforDOS and it worked and i am like wtf my VIA card is bad. But then i noticed that i forgot to do the cd command to switch drives.
usually i would:
A:\cd c: i had used this to switch drives numerous times before when i flashed several units. but now when i do this it will switch to the C: drive and then back to the A: like i stated before.
however if i leave the cd out and simply use
A:\c: it changes to the C: drive perfectly......talk about weird shit dude i have no idea why it started doing this.

so it worked and i updated my 360 from 1.41 to 1.5 thanks for the advice and help

oh and does anyone know why iX1.5 doesnt allow a slower drive speed than 12x? did they find out the slower speeds are a possible flag to MS? or was it just left out?

nice work! glad its working. the jumping from drive to drive with the change directory command might be something inherint to the version of dos.... I am not really sure.

the 12x thing... the guys who developed it pasted a pastbin that said pretty much what you thought. so 12x is all we get.
