you just plug it in the back of the tv as long as your tv supports a s-video hook up.

First a little clarification on your TV. When you say "flat screen", do you mean LCD or plasma HD display, or do you mean CRT (old style) with a flat screen on it?

These are in order from best to worse.

HDMI- Audio and Video
DVI- Video Only
Component- Video Only
S Video- Video Only
Composite (Yellow)- Video Only
Coax (F connection- Audio and Video.

If your old Trinitron Sony TV has this female connector on the back (which I believe it has),

Then, this is the cable you need:

It will improve the quality of the yellow RCA connector, but sure it is not the best, like Component or HDMI which comes with newer LCD TV´s.

Enjoy.

I'm not an expert and don't claim to know the ins and outs of picture quality, but I can tell you that from experience, S-Video improves the quality. From what I've seen, it improves the color output. I've played movies using both the standard yellow cable and compared them to the S-Video cable. The bright colors are more crisp and stable. There is no "stutter" along the edges. The difference is especially evident with cartoons. I use S-Video out for my PS2 and the games are more visually enjoyable. I'm sure someone on afterdawn can tell you the technical reason why.

Yeah. as emugamer said you will have a better picture. Composite video is sent through a single pin, whereas S-Video sends it through two, colour and brightness (chrominance and luminance). This helps to reduce many negative aspects of having a single pin trasfer all video information to the screen (like colour bleeding).
