new laser works in one 360 but not another?

hey guys this might be a bit long but here goes. i have two 360's both in need of new lasers (both hitachi's-one a 78fk and one a 59dj)when one of my lasers arrived, i desoldered the anti-static point and put it into the 78fk drive. it only played 3 of 12 original games. thinking i needed to pot tweak the new laser but not wanting to, i put the new laser in the 59dj to verify and to my surprise it plays everything. i then put the laser in a second (spare)78fk drive and it played a few different games than the first 78fk but still only a few out of 12. am i wrong in assuming that since both 78fk drives played some games that the drives are good and therefore need to pot tweak? if thats the case, why would i need to pot tweak the laser in a 78fk but not the 59dj?
