I got a 360 for free from a friend and am attempting to fix the problem when it turns on, fans hit high speed, you get the 2 red light error and the fans shut off. It happens as soon as I turn it on. I have taken it apart and all I can see is that its missing all of the screws on the bottom plate of the metal.

According to that page, my CPU is overheating. Basically I just need to tighten those screws and it should be fine? I am missing the screws that go from the metal casing to the motherboard. Do you know if those are necessary or if I can run the system with the motherboard out of the metal?

I believe you can run it out of the metal casing, because that is what people do when they bake it to try and reset the solder. However the mobo may be grounded through the case like some electronics are so idk if i would want to do it long term (the case may also help disburse the heat).

As far as tightening those screws go, they are only there if the xclamp replacement has been done. What it sounds like to me is your heatsink on the cpu is not set properly and causing it to instantly overheat.
If the xclamp has not been done i would suggest doing so, be sure to replace the thermal paste but do not use too much.
If it is done i would suggest taking it all off and doing it again remembering to replace the thermal paste (clean it good first).

Tightened up the heatsink and it works perfectly now. Thanks for that website, it really helped.
Now do you know where I can download the latest Hitachi firmware to be able to play backups on the console?
