wii missing dvd drive need help

Well bought a used Wii(working) that was missing dvd drive thinking I will buy a new one and put it in no problem. Turned it on to make sure it works. Home works, menu works, updated to newest version to go on to shop channel. Most of the time it goes to black screen when i click on shop channel. One time it said disc error remove disc and restart wii.(Black screen on weather channel too). Is this just because there is no drive in the console. I'd rather not dish out 80 bucks to test it out. Any help would be appreciated.
