Found this at Gizmodo and thought i would pass it along as i have seen some threads on this lately. http://i.gizmodo.com/5133447/how-to-add-...tly-and-cheaply

i know a lot of this is common knowledge to some but not others. Hope it helps out someone.

I was surprised to see that the reg xbox wifi adapter will work on 360, i never thought of that before.

If you send me questions on Live about modding or anything related i will block you. Dont be an idiot.

cheapest option, if you alrady have one, is to use your laptop. only problem is, windows seems to have a hard time with this, and strangely enough, this method seems to work much better on apple laptops, or more specifically, the mac operating system.

personelly i use a linksys wrt54g wireless router, with modified firmware, to recieve a wireless signal, instead of sending it, and plug it into the ethernet port on the back of the xbox 360 using a 1 foot cat6 cable for optimal upload and download speed. the cat6 calbe cost me 3 dollars, and the router cost me about 25 dollars. so, next to the laptop method, i would say that this is the cheapest method.

Yeah, DD-WRT firmware gets my vote. My 360's work fine this way.
Though i believe any old standard wifi router can be used as long as it's configured properly beforehand, then simply plugged into the 360. There's a lot of choice, and certainly no need to buy overly expensive official 360 gaming adapters.

This brings an interesting question to mind. I watch WMV-HD movies and AVI movies through the dashboard video tab (using WMP11 not windows media center) and i can acess my laptop which is on my N-band 5ghz side of my Dlink 855. now if i use the hacked firmware on my us robotics MaxG (says its 802.11g that is capable of 108 Mega whatever a sec) do you think i could get my WMV-HD movies to play without buffering?

561427 - this isn't eBay, you need to remove the advert and email address from your signature ASAP. By all means start a for sale thread in the Afterdawn Marketplace forum but you'll need to refer to the Marketplace Rules as well as the normal Forum Rules.

Interesting question. unfortunately it falls a little outside of my "yes it will work" or "no it wont work" answers. If it isnt too much trouble, i would suggest trying it just to see. you cant hurt the router, as you can always flash the original firmware back on it. and you certainly couldnt mess anything else up trying it. i would suggest trying it, and posting your findings for others to try or test to perfect the idea. if you run into problems, post it and see if anyone can work with you to getting it going.

i think if u are using a wireless option it may always buffer due to the fact that wifi only runs at like 54mps and a wired connection will run at 100mbps. this isnt for sure tho.

If you run it through a wireless-N bridge, you won't get any buffering, as far as I have seen. Depends on the situation, I'm sure, but it's an option to consider.

So i have found a new way that i was not aware of before to shar wifi from a PC/Laptop to the 360 in order to play on Live. I was sitting at home with no internet and i started leeching my neighbors unsecured wifi on my laptop. Barely any signal and going from 1.0-5.5 mbps which is far less than ideal.
I figured i would give it a shot and see if the 360 could connect to live.
i couldnt remember exactly how to do the bridge between 2 connections so i just started messing around with it.

Step 1. Go to network connections folder. Right click the Wifi connection and go to properties. Go to the advanced tab and check the box for Internet Connection Sharing and Apply the settings.

Step 2. Back in the Network connections folder find the Local Area connection which is the ethernet port to be used. Right click and go to properties. Scroll down the services list to the bottom and highlight TCP/Ip and click the properties button. Configure the connection to use the IP address of 192.168.0.1 ( may have to use 192.168.1.1 if there is a conflict with exisiting network, ur router/modem might be assigned 192.1768.0.1 already) the subnet setting should default to 255.255.255.0, if not then manual set it. All other fields should be BLANK..ALL OF them. Apply these settings.

Step 3. connect the 360 to the computer via ethernet port. make sure 360 network settings are set to automatic. It would find an IP address and the PC should report that the local area net is now connected.

I was able to use this with a very weak connection for several hours playing COD4, COD5, GTA4, Gears 2, Pure and some other games and it was all good. I was extremely surprised that live worked with such low bandwidth and i only had 1-2 times when it lagged at all and it was for like 1 second and no one else compained about me lagging.

Enjoy!

stealthdf,

good work. this is what i hope to turn this thread into. a way for all users to obtain wireless. but i still have not had much luck with the stupid USR5461 router and briding using its factory bridge setting. i am new to it but i dont think i am stupid. it seems that there are too many vauge answers to the guide that USR has provided... I will keep eliminateing them and i will try to post a guide that will work. and who knows maybe USR should pay me cuz thier directions SUCK!!!

I cant get the USR to work so i guess this is going no where. and it is debatable if it works anyways because maxG still may not be fast enough to support the higher speed that is required to play the WMV HD files that i have. for now I am just wired because i dont have an N speed router that i could turn into a wireless bridge. sorry i failed.
