NERO 6 - No space on disc when writing DVD?

I am trying to write a file (just over 1gb) to a dvdr but it will not work.
I am converting an AVI file to DVD using the Nero 6 wizard. I have tried writing to disc and the HDD without any luck.
The disc is new and blank and my HDD has just about 20gb spare but I keep getting an error message. The error message writes to a log file, some of which is below:
ERROR: cause: 58 (disk_full) source: _VOBS description: There is not enough space on the disk.
DumpExceptionInformation(): Caught SEH Exception 0xe06d7363 during encoding DumpExceptionInformation(): Exception was raised from C:WINDOWSsystem32kernel32.dll at RVA 0x00013887

N.V.E (or NeroVision Express) you used yeah ?
I use Nero to do many things , but I do not use it to encode .avi to .vob
You'd be better off getting something like MainConcept MPEG Encoder which will encode to MPEG2 (dvd compliant) from the original .avi
Then use TMPGEnc DVD Author to convert MPEG2 file to VOB/BUP/IFO files (ready for burning in DVD-Video mode)
That process is a lot quicker , and you wont get crashes/errors...

Hi,
I had the same problem, tried converting a AVI to DVD but NeroVision Express 2 decided to use all of my 60gig of free space to do so!!! Eventually it ran out of space and halted. But thanks to herbman advice I will be changing my ways.

I think its working. I've encoded to MPEG with Main Concept but unfortunately did not register the program and got a little spining logo in the top left corner of the screen.
But Im now using Nero to go straight to work on the disc. Been going for 2hrs and 5mins and I think the total is up to 2 and a bit gig. So marked improvements. Will check in here again soon if anything goes wrong. :)

Ok. So I should have taken your advice and used TMPGEnc. I hate Nero. Its failed 'x' times now!!!! I have spent more than 48 hours trying to encode a single film!!!
Please tell me all I need to know about converting this F$$King AVI to DVD before I lose all my hair (and im getting pretty bald as it is)!

Sorry All,
I did not mean to come across angry or annoyed with Herbsman, quite the opposite Im VERY VERY pleased with the help that he has given me. If fact I'm very impressed as most boards just ignore my posts. Maybe I seem to come across angry and anoyed??? I am truely sorry I didnt not mean to upset anyone.
Put to get back to the subject Im in a bit of a pickle. I tried herbsmans method but it fialed :( sorry I forgot to add that to my last post herbsman.
I tried the guides but they tell me to do the same as weedsman (approx). When I use either TMPenc or NeroVision Express 2 it fails. Nero takes up all space on disc and crashes. And TMPenc point blank refuses to even start. Mentions something about not loading a module.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. And once again Im sorry for upsetting anyone I would never insult someone that Im asking help from - how would I expect to be helped.
P.S. Its not just the one file either its not working with any AVI's - also its a fresh install of XP so not a Windows Fault.

Sorry I didnt mention that. You are right, when it comes to encoding or writting movies to disc Im a complete Noob. Im not ashamed to admit it, it just gets me down when people laugh at me :(
Ok let me tell you what I have done more accurately. I used TMPGEnc (standard) that fails. Then I upgraded to TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 which also fails. It has the same problem as mentioned before but sometimes mentions something about not having an MPEG2 codec. But I have I have power DVD installed and when I use G-Spot it says that there are codecs installed.
So anyways I used TMPGEnc DVD aswell, that worked. But Ideally I need these files in VOB format I think to writ to DVD. I tried to use NeroVision Express 2 after I encoded it and it did its usual, take 6 hours to fill my HD to the brim (and then fails :( )
Is there an easier way to go straight from AVI to DVD. Like a one button wonder that even I cant bugger up.
Now that your speaking again weedsman - sorry buddy I didnt mean to rock the boat. Im just a little frustrated, mostly because Im a noob :(

I don't claim to be no expert at all but I use cyberlink power producer or Nero vision express se, both of these have encoded and burnt many films for me with no problems. They are quite easy programes but like all soft wear it takes a little working out.

If I read you correctly Setherith,
You got files from TMPGEnc. They should be MPEG 2 DVD compliant files. You'll need to use TMPEGEnc DVD Author to get your VOB's -

Hey it's okay , I've been around too long to take anything said personally , plus I understand frustration of being a n00b... after all I was once *many moons ago* lol

I do not think a one click wonder application exists (that doesnt have bugs) or is the best way to do things.
Easiest way for me to do .AVI to .VOB is the a forementioned method.
As thus;
MainConcept MPEG Encoder 1.4
TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.5.13.44
Nero 6 Ultra
MainConcept to convert whatever file to DVD compliant MPEG2.
TMPGEnc DVD Author to convert single MPEG2 file to .VOB whilst adding chapters/menus (of course).
Nero Burning Rom to burn .VOB .bup .ifo files to red VIDEO_TS folder.
Whole operation is done quicker in time than it would take other enocders to do the basics ;-)

It works!!! I got a DVD, now after more than a weeks hard graft I can finally watch my film on a bigger screen. Just followed the accumulated knowlege written above and it worked!!! Yeah baby!
Dont know why it didnt work before, Im sure I followed the same routine as before but this time it worked??? Either ways thanks for all your help guys I couldnt have done it without you.
Im going to convert a few more and have a film marathon ready.

Hi All,
Maybe I picked a wrong thread, my appologies. After DVDShrink finishes ripping, Nero-6 (latest update 6.3.1.6) starts but it then say that media I inserted (DVD-R) does not have space to burn. DVDShrink is set for DVD-5 as default and ripping has auto compression for main movie but I do custom for other sections. Any idea what I do wrong?

Saying you're trying to add files to a DVD-R is of no help for us people trying to aide your success...if you give the brand of blank DVD-R media it would help.
Also , do you usually have success with Nero ... or is this the first time of trying to burn with it ??
More details would help amay !!

Thanks Guys.
I'm using Fuji and Memorex 4X DVD-R and have been using DVDShrink and Nero combination for short time but managed to burn few DVD's before with no problems. I updated Nero to the latest revision from 6.3... to the latest 6.3.1.6 a week ago, maybe this is the problem?

First, let me take a guess and say you have to use Nero in the Classic mode NOT wizard.
Step by Step ?
Do not use Nero Wizard.
When you open Nero Burning ROM, you will be at the ?New Compilation? window. Directly under the title ?New Compilation? is a choice block to choose either DVD or CD, choose DVD. Directly under that click on the DVD Video Icon. Then click ?New? in the upper right corner of that screen, NOT the main screen.
You now are in the DVD Video window. In the left screen, click VIDEO_TS. In the File Browser screen, 3rd from the left, trace your path to the VIDEO_TS folder, the one you made earlier holding all of your files and click on that folder. All of your VIDEO_TS files are now opened in the right screen. Click on the top file, hold down the ?Shift? key and then click the bottom file thereby hi-lighting the entire column of files. Click and (holding the left mouse button down) drag the entire column of files to the open screen, second from the left.
Now click the icon on the task bar that shows a match on a disc, and then click ?OK? and now shout out, ?Who?s your Daddy Now ??"
Now the important thing, Don't touch the PC until it's finished working.
Now the reason for inquiring about your media -
I hope your sitting down because this is a lot more important than most people realize -
Memorex is a good example, figures as high as 50% coasters have been reported (One member bought a stack of 50 and got 23 good burns.), not what I would call an impressive record. Many times you?ll get a ?cyclic redundancy error?. This message can mean that your discs are scratched or dirty, it can also mean that your ?cheap? media won?t be accepted by your burner :-(
Let?s get your media straightened out -
1.* Cheap media skips, freezes, fuzzes, pixelats, refuses to be recognized, partially jams and of course, our good old standby, happening far too often, either isn?t accepted (the old ?cyclic redundancy error? notice), doesn?t burn or won?t play at all :-(
Inexpensive media is great for text, Data, Spreadsheets, .Jpg and .Gif pictures and is good even for MP3 music BUT for DVD backups - BLAaaaaaT! It SUCKTH in an extremely Big-th way !
2. A good grade media is needed for DVD reproduction !
Ritek G04's or Verbatim are what we?re looking for OR any media boasting ?Advanced AZO Metal Dye?, this indicates a superior dye application, while they are a bit ?pricey? they are acceptable.
Prices online from Meritline.com have gotten Ritek G04 down below a dollar a disc -
Question - If you make coasters out of 3 cheap discs and good copies from 3 Verbatim discs or 3 Ritek G04 discs - which ones then are too expensive ?
Bear in mind, Memorex, Fuji, Sony, TDK, Orange Pack and others are quite good for your MP3 music, picture archives, Spread sheets, Data and your text backups and archives, they just don?t work well for DVD backups.
Remember, for DVD backups, purchasing inexpensive media is a gamble, some people win, the majority of people lose, varying amounts but, they still lose :-(
Using good grade media can guarantee you one thing to an absolute certainty, it surely cannot hurt.
and one last tip, read your DVD from your DVD-ROM and not your burner -

Hi Pete,
Sorry for not respondig earlier.
I did try to burn using your proceedure but with the same result. Maybe it has something to do with my new 200Gig hard drive which is a slave and stack in PIO mode which I'm trying to change to DMA but with no success so far. I used your proceedure before from my C drive and it was working fine. I will now try to burn from C again.
Now, thank you very much for the DVD media guide and your sugestions. I may have to buy DVD-ROM as you recomended. Not sure why?

It?s easier for your PC to read the disc and it is much easier on your DVD burner. Constant stopping and starting of your burner required to read a disc could cause overheating and premature wearing out of your DVD R/W drive.

Hi Pete,
Thanks for the explanation on DVD-ROM. I just pyrchased and installed one.
I also managed to take care of the additional hard drive by adding a PCI controller card.
Now back to the burning and space on DVD-R. I used DVDShrink and DVD Decrypter combination by following you instructions to set it up. It works fine until it is starting burning process and checks for space on DVD-R. This is what DVD Decrypter reports:

First, let's try going to DVD Shrink, "Edit", "Preferences" then change Target DVD size from "DVD-5" to "Custom" and set size to "4360".
Next, Do you have DVD Decrypter to burn automatically or did you start DVD Decrypter on your own ?
Did you set DVD Shrink to burn to hard Drive or ISO ?
You have gone from one post saying that you're using DVD Shrink and Nero to now saying you're using DVD Shrink and Decrypter.
How about now you tell me what settings you have on DVD Shrink and what you have on DVD Decrypter.

Once I set the size to recomended by you, it worked fine with DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter combination in automatic mode using ISO.
Next I will try DVD Shrink and Nero combination. Maybe it will work also.

Hi. I got MainConcept MPEG Encoder and encoded a file to MPEG 2. Then I tried to "add file" it on TMPGEnc. It says:
The video resolution 512x384 cannot be used for a standard DVD. For standard DVD you can only use the following
352x240 352x480 720x480 (NTSC format only)
352x288 352x576 704x576 (PAL format only)
-----------------------------------------------
The video framerate 29.97 fps cannot be used with the resolution 512x384
This framerate can only be used with the following resolutions:
352x240 352x480 720x480 (NTSC format only)
So I tried to encode it again with 720x480 width/height, but the mpeg encoder gave me an error:
MPEG video encoding
MPEG audio encoding, audio mode: 2
MPEG muxing
Error: BUFSTRM:Unable to open file D:\Video Downloads\Shows\Kenshin\Rurouni Kenshin\Rurouni Kenshin - 12 - Birth of a Boy Swordsman.mpg for writing.
MPEG output file: D:\Video Downloads\Shows\Kenshin\Rurouni Kenshin\Rurouni Kenshin - 12 - Birth of a Boy Swordsman.mpg
Error in converting:
The parameter is incorrect.
Not sure what to do.
