Does anyone know where you can buy the CPU/GPU Cell Broadband Engine chip from the PS3? Of if they are even available to the public or repair shops?
thanks

Wouldn't your best (and cheapest) bet would be to just purchase a malfunctioned PS3?

That is an option, but I would love to get a source of the chips and then the board repair would be able to happen.

Plus a broken unit might have a damaged chip too.

Does anyone know who the manufacturer is or if there is a product code for the chip?

I think IBM makes both PS3 and 360 chips.

I don't think they're removable without melting all the individual solders, and I don't think ibm would be allowed to sell you the same cell processor as in the ps3, likewise with nvidia and the RSX. What do you want them for anyway?

But if you want them you'd have to do as bhetrick said and get a busted ps3 off of ebay or somewhere, its very rare for the the cell or rsx to be busted on the consoles. Or you could just find one that dosent read disks so you would know the problem isnt with the cell or rsx.

So the YLOD has nothing to do with the GPU or CPU? then the boards are fixable for the most part?

The ylod indicates hardware failure in general it could be anything from the hard drive to the video output. It could be the cell but its very rare that that's the case, and if it is its usually because of the heatsink paste not being properly applied so it overheats. I'm not saying that's the case every time but it seems to be the majority of the causes of the cell problems if it is the cell causing it.

Well I do remember readin whilst the Cell processor had just been made that Sony and IBM had big plans for it. Like they wanted to place it in quite a few devices such as your TV, DVD/Blueray recorder and whole lot of other things. Not only that they wanted to make th PS3 the CPU of all these items and others, for instance your kettle is set to boil after your favourite TV series end, and other crap like that.

This of course would have meant selling Cell to other companies, but I dont think they've done anything like this yet, most likely becuase it'll cost them too much to produce.

Having worked at IBM I can tell you they aren't available to the public. Also IBM is no longer manufacturing them, or they won't be shortly. They'll soon be outsourced to China (or Korea, didn't pay much attention to trivial details).

IBM actually designed/manufactured all three CPU's for this generation (360, PS3, Wii).

I have an extra motherboard for sale, the board is from a 40GB model. The only thing that was wrong with it was the controller card which I tried to fix but failed at it. When the motherboard is hooked up everything works, I can get on the internet and connect to my wifi, no video issues or overheating. Send me a pm if your are interested.
