You need to hook up the PSP to PC via USB if you want to transfer files, duh. But I don't understand the part about battery and memstick.

i mean do i need it to mod the psp? or do i just need the battery and duo?

psp is it phat or slim
the firmware that is on the psp

I would like to apologize to all the incorrect answer you received. It is because your question is to vague. What i think your really asking is "can you used a memory stick pro slot or adapter to install the custom firmware on your memory card?"
If so, the answer to your question is "yes you can but the likelihood of the magic memory stick working is very low." The psp can read and understand its own writing then some memory stick pro adapter or card reader slot can write it. The magical memory stick professional duo is very sensitive. If not made correctly, your chances of installing custom firmware is lower then normal.
However, if you question is "does modding require usb connection?" then your answer is no, you can do it with a memory card reader.
