LG shows off plasma TV with one billion-to-one contrast ratio

article published on 20 January, 2009

LG has showed off two new plasma HDTVs dubbed the Xcanvas bobos 42PQ60D and 50PQ60D. The larger model boasts an unprecedented 1,000,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a 600Hz refresh rate. Both models have built-in USB ports that allow users to playback many file types including WMV and DivX videos. According to the source, "speakers are built into either TV, each of which is just over 3 ... [ read the full article ]

I did a search on contrast ratio and found this, it is probably a bit out of date but it says:

Quote:
Dynamic: This is a fake number that is achievable only through the use of an iris or contrast control system that can open/close to control light output. It decreases black scenes to appear darker, while increasing bright scenes to appear brighter - but it can't handle both at once.
So basically it looks like the contrast ratios like this one are simply used for mental purposes to say "Hey we have a 1 billion contrast ratio, that means our TV is awesome!"

More than anything else I would be interested in the built-in USB drives (although I assume it is really just USB slots, I could be mistaken). Showing vanilla DivX or WMV files on a TV like that should be a crime though, considered how new and "advanced" of a TV it is. :P

Peace

Yeah, 600Hz refresh rate is absolute bullshit too, considering that the "P" in 1080P signifies a 50 or 60Hz signal, the rest is all interpolated, the general verdict is that the best feature of all these sets boasting ridiculous refresh rates is that there is an "off" setting for the extra frames. Higher refresh rates were actually helpful to reduce flicker on CRT sets by re-illuminating the phosphor, but not so the modern units.

But hey, go ahead and buy one if you feel the need to compensate for something.

You are right that 600Hz is acquired from frame interpolation. But 60Hz isn't the native refresh rate either, unless you are talking tv shows. They use 3:2 pulldown to convert 24Hz film to 60 Hz video. Since nobody is changing film standards to higher than 24fps, someone has to do something to get better video, and that is what they are trying to do with frame interpolation. If you like it then good, if you don't like it then turn it off. But I do agree that 600Hz sounds like they are trying to show off.

For anything under 5000 contrast ratio I use it as a marker for general quality and from all the TVs I have seen it seems to be a good maerusing stick.

800 CR for a 300$ monitor or 2500CR on a 200 monitor the rest of the specs are about the same.

are they still making plasma screen tvs ? seems a bit silly considering the European Union is about to ban them for the enormous waste of electricity ( they use 4 or 5 times more than an LCD screen ) and therefore increase carbon emissions , greenhouse gases etc etc ( I'm quoting from the EU report not my opinions )
so therefore only in the states and asia will this have a market....the 2 worst offenders on the planet for contributing to global warming ;)

Ok..........so you threw a few buzz words around to make yourself look like you an 'expert' per se.

I'm going to be nice here or else I'll be banned for like the 30th time..............600Hz refresh rate buddy is the same as the present day 120Hz (common) and the soon-to-be 240Hz (Sony) refresh rates. NOTHING TO DO WITH THE 60Hz of the actual broadcast signal.

ALL TV, monitors, etc are interpolated meaning "calculate intermediate values between known values" (these values being Vertical and Horizontal lines of resolution) or an "average of the two"

As for your H-U-Y-A statement of "not on modern units".......well.....I'm certainly thankful you're not making any decisions for me.

The "P" represents NOT INTERLACED or not 'grid-like' (kinda NOT like a #) and the advent of 120Hz tvs absolutely, without question virtually eliminates the video drag commonly seen in sports. The advent of 240Hz will totally eliminate.

Now that you know........you mustn't propagate nonsense anymore.

...if they could only get the smell to come out of the screen some how when the picture is displayed...Then you would have something!

Then people would have a real reason not to leave their home! LOL!

Cheers!

Get your facts straight. The "P" represents PROGRESSIVE, or sequential. Your definition of interlaced is completely false, it is not grid like by any means. This fact alone shows how little you truly understand of the physics involved, you're just a shill. Do some research before YOU purport to be an expert.

Interpolated information NEVER actually happened and can be full of artifacts. It could be close to what happened between two frames, and in a lot of cases the approximation isn't too bad. A football in front of a crowd shot whilst the camera is panning is a classic example, the set confuses the ball for faces and false information is generated.

A 600Hz refresh of a 60Hz signal without interpolation is essentially no different to a 60Hz refresh on a sample and hold set that doesn't scan like a CRT. An interpolated 600Hz refresh of a 60Hz signal means that 90% of the pictures you see are potentially nonsense. It has EVERYTHING to do with the broadcast frame rate, the 120Hz and 240Hz Sony rubbish is all the same marketing BS that you've bought into.

Actually, here is a nice explanation:
Quote:
It?s About Color, Not Motion

A plasma has to have at least 8 subfields per frame in order to produce the 256 shades of red, green and blue that make up a full color picture. And since there are 60 frames per second, a 480Hz (8 x 60) refresh rate is nothing to brag about. It?s a minimum requirement. With 10 subfields, as LG and Samsung are now touting, they can in theory do more fine adjustment of color.
In other words, it will still be a 60Hz refresh rate compared to frames with the LCD, but in more detailed color.

I should have said that interlaced was every other line as opposed to progessive being line by line but done from top left to bottom right which is similar to that of a criss cross.

Of course the "P" STANDS FOR PROGRESSIVE. Any moron knows that. I just broke the word progressive down to lamens terms. People understand interlaced more than progressive. Saying "Not interlaced" was assuming your head was out of your ass and that you knew the OPPOSITE of interlaced IS PROGRESSIVE.

And the fact that you actually state that 120Hz technology is rubbish the is "bought into" means your head IS up your ass.

As 120 is an even multiple of 24(fps)it is possible to present a 24frame/s sequence without Judder. Same goes for 240 and 600.

As for your statement about "600Hz refresh of 60Hz signal without interpolation".....I said all monitors/tvs are interpolated in some way so why you just brought that point about is beyond me.

At the VERY LEAST..........you're just as dumb as I am.

While I can't speak for all Plasma screens, I would say probably not. I have a Panasonic Viera, although I don't know the exact model, and it has a burn-in time of about 24 hours (That is, a static image won't burn-in until its on for ~24 hours.)

They also have a "Pixel Shifter" that is supposed to prevent burn-in under all conditions for a much longer length of time but my TV isn't equipt with that feature.

I watched the extended LOTR series 2-3 weeks ago on it and the widescreen "bars" didn't burn into it.

Again the burn-in problems seem to have been eliminated, at least on the Panasonic Plasma TVs, but I am not sure about other brands although I would assume those would have at least lengthened the time before burn-in occurs due to advances in plasma technology.

I have Sony with 120Hz, my brother in law's Sony is 60Hz, I cannot watch his set, especially sports, it actually bothers my eyes, yeah I had to spend bigger bucks for it but it was worth it for me,

I just hate the fact that because of probably some small chip they charge you a really BS rate, the damn chip probably cost's about 50 bucks if not less I'm assuming of course.

Well from how I hear it they sell the units at first for a third of their price so they need to make money on on future sales to break even.

And frankly if you can't wait 2 years for the price to halve because the new models are out you suck :P

The acer 22 inch lcd 2K:1 CR monitor that was on sale non refurb for 159 I will wait until Xmas season of next year maybe the damn thing will be 100 :P

I suck, wow, a little hard there arent you, if you think I'm gonna wait two years compared to spending an extra two hundred bucks than who WHAT.

I have been watching my 120 for a year now, and not getting a headache compared to not watching a 60Hz over a 120Hz is a no brainer, even if I had to spend 400 the headache issue is still worth it to me, I watch tv often, but I still have the right to bitch about the price.

And no I in no way am the kind of person that is a must have new products, not only is it unimportant to me I could'nt afford it anyway even if I was I would not be that stupid.

So please before you go around telling people they suck I would back up and think a little bit.

point taken ZippyDSM, no problem, and yes I understand not having the bigger bucks for something better, even though I enjoy the hell out of my new set it has taken me back big time, I just did without on many things there for a while and yes that really sucked lol.

Because of my age I dont go out much anymore and my bar days are pretty much over also because of the bucks mostly, so pretty much my tv is my main entertainment now, but you know what, I don't miss the outside world much anyway, cause lately like how did you say it, mainly most people suck lol.

You know its funny you mention that, for a while I was doing the same thing, watching these big sets at friends or family, I was never impressed with them especially if you watch the non HD channels, those were horrible, even some of the HD channels didnt impress me, not until I saw the XBR Sony is when I dicited to make my move.

Is it a great set, yes, but what made me still angry to this day, after sony did thier rootkit bullshit on thier music cd's I vowed never to buy anything sony, and didn't, at the time is was only sony that had the 120, I still am agitated at myself in doing so, hell the 40 inch sets were going for around 23 to 25 hundred bucks for that XBR at that time anyway, I got mine for 1700 tax included so yes I jumped on it, I try to fool myself by thinking at least maybe sony didn't make so much on this sale, cause I'm still pissed at them.

Now I hear that 240's might be coming out soon, that I would like to see, I have read somewhere that the motion sickness as I call it will be totally eliminated, it's weird how most people the 60 or 120 they cant even tell the difference or as most say it just doesnt bother them, I was I had thier eyes.

Some 3d engies can do that while others don;t it is funny how the mind works, 240? I thought 480hrz was the current standard 0-o

I might tag a nice 32+ inch TV that can do basic 1XXX by 7XX (or its wide screen counter part)computer resolution I'd be happy with that for 500$ but frankly I dunno if I can save up that much ><
