Burning freezes at 22%

Hello, I am new to DVD burning. Whenever I try and make a backup of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Nero freezes at 22%. I am following step by step the DVDshrink guide from this site, using Nero to burn. I am getting quite the pile of coasters. I am also having the same problem with DVDXCopy Platinum. It's at 22% both ways. I backed up 2 DVDs before this one and they both worked fine. Then I installed Roxio EZ 6 and PowerDVD. Once I started getting the errors I uninstalled both. Is this a problem with my hardware or with my software? What can I do to get a full clean backup? Thanks so much for helping me!

ok Double start by cutting costs to your wallet use a dvd re writable +/- r if you are quite new .....especially with a problem like this if the dvd doesn't burn right you just re format and bobs ya uncle new dvd n no coaster
well I would try DVD Decrypter to try ripping it
then crunch it with DVD2One to see if that works
I rip with Nero also but what ever you prefer is cool dunno any other burners except Nero as it does the job 4 Me

Yeah, after a few, I got a RW. It's still frustrating because my RW is giving me the same error, but at least it's a free one...
I'll try those other programs, but do you think another program is the answer? Why would it freeze at 22% in two different programs? On DVDXCopy it says burn complete, then I click ok to find an error, all it says is "error" and in Nero, it just says no time remaining on the burn and stays at 22% for as long as I'm willing to let it sit there. Why would it have worked on my first three discs I burned but now on none? Also, I forgot to leave my specs. I am using WinXPPro. AMD athlon xp 1.6 ghz. 1.5 gig ram. IO magic dual format DVD burner. I am using Memorex DVD+R discs and a RiDATA DVD+RW (came with the burner). Thanks

I only use DVD Decrypter to back up My films because all you get is the film ....when you place it in the dvd player it automatically starts playing .....then crunch with dvd2one
I personally would try DVD Decrypter but as you said it does it with 2 other rippers and stops at the same point that is odd I NEVER used dvdxcopy
its a process of illumination if you try DVD Decrypter DVD2One and you burn it with Nero and it stops at 22 percent again it wont be a ripper thats at fault it would most likely be something else .....

Does crunch just mean to compress?

yeah I personally do not have any of the indiana jones yet so cant tell you if it needs doing
but from thinking I am 99% sure its would need to be compressed to fit upon a blank dvd-/+ r
dvd2one will do that for you

It definately needs compressed, which I have been trying to do with DVDXCopy and with DVDShrink. I guess I'll try a different movie and see if it's just a problem with Indiana.

yeah you compress it with DVD2One
it takes say a 6 or 7 gig film and creates ...
iof bup +vob files to 4.36 gig so that it will fit upon your blank dvd media

Ok, I tried another movie and just DVDShrink for the encoding and burning, and it froze at 16%, then I get this error:

I never see problems when encoding or anything, it's only during the burning process that I get errors. Do i need to exchange my dvd burner for a working one?

Downloaded the newest aspi driver from Nero, put it in the program files/ahead/nero directory, like the instructions on the page said to do. Still didn't work. 22% again. I guess 22 is my unlucky number. I have only been using my +RW disc lately. Should I get a new RW to try experimenting with or should my single one work? It worked on my first two movies, just nothing works anymore

After you reinstall your ASPI layer, I'd like you to try a couple of things for me if you will -
First, I see you are running XP. I am guessing you have Roxio Easy CD Creator installed. We need that like we need a Root Canal without Novocain. "Please", Lying on the floor and pleading and begging, "Please put a bullet in it's brain and hide the body in another room." (Translation: uninstall it.) - Roxio is so bad it could cause rain to fall on the Pope.
Now that it's gone, we'll continue :P
Lets update your version of DVD Shrink to 3.1.7 beta 4 and here it is -

One of the issues addressed was a problem with "Freezing" - it doesn't explain why DVD XCopy "Froze" up on you too but, I'd like to stick with DVD Shrink for now -
You shouldn't have too much trouble with Memorex but personally, I like either Ritek G04 OR Verbatim :-)
OK, back to the task at hand -
If you already have your DVD Shrink folder for Indiana Jones, don't worry, if not - Let's create one on your Desktop -
You say you only run into trouble when burning soooo, Let's use your new DVD Shrink and Backup your DVD to the folder you just made so that Shrink can put it's VIDEO_TS folder there and it's easy for you to find :-)
Now, let's uninstall Nero from Control Panel and reboot to totally clear it out - Now reinstall it, reboot to allow it to settle in :)
Let's go to msconfig and click "Disable All", apply, OK, reboot PC.
Now - open Nero, and burn your disc (we're still using our RW media) - If you're not sure how to do it in Nero's "classic" mode - just follow these directions -
Do not use Nero Wizard.
When you open Nero Burning ROM, you will be at the ?New Compilation? window. Directly under the title ?New Compilation? is a choice block to choose either DVD or CD, choose DVD. Directly under that click on the DVD Video Icon. Then click ?New? in the upper right corner of that screen, NOT the main screen.
You now are in the DVD Video window. In the left screen, click VIDEO_TS. In the File Browser screen, 3rd from the left, trace your path to the VIDEO_TS folder, the one you made earlier holding all of your files and click on that folder. All of your VIDEO_TS files are now opened in the right screen. Click on the top file, hold down the ?Shift? key and then click the bottom file thereby hi-lighting the entire column of files. Click and (holding the left mouse button down) drag the entire column of files to the open screen, second from the left.
Now click the icon on the task bar that shows a match on a disc, and then click ?OK? and now ? ?Burn Baby, Burn !? ? ?Let me hear you say it, Who?s your Daddy Now ????
(Wheeew, now I need a cigarette)
Guess what my Friend ? You are done !!!
(While this is burning DO NOT USE YOUR PC !)
as they say, The good Lord willing and the creek don't rise, we'll have a burned DVD that comes out finer than frog hair :D

I already uninstalled roxio. I gathered all of the problems last night from all the different forums and PM's I got from you Pete. I just looked in my msconfig file about a second before you posted this and saw that even though I had uninstalled roxio, there was still a roxio file in my startup so I disabled that. I'm going to try that first then I'll try your walkthrough (which is exactly the way I've been doing things) (well, minus the uninstalling and such :) Thanks for the help

Well, I did the whole procedure that you said to do Pete, and it worked excellently for a DVD+RW. Then I tried it on a DVD+R and it freezes at 22%. So the RW worked and the R didn't. Is this a hardware problem?

It was a firmware issue! I didn't even think to update the firmware. Apparently I picked a troublesome model, but it's working now (so far anyway) Thanks everyone for your help.
