I recently found out about softmodding wii. But all i read so far is about it letting you get all of this free homebrew stuff, i'm not sure yet if it lets you play backups. Can someone verify?

Also, i've been looking at how to do it and the steps are a tad confusing (even the tut on this site). Can someone explain it in a simpler way, also tell me when the sd card should be in my comp or in the wii, the one here doesn't specify, and when it says copy over files, i have no idea where to copy files over to.

So ya, can someone explain? The softmod i'm talking about is something called twighlight (or something like that).

Yes, you can play backups once you install HBC and WiiGator.

If the steps in the tutorial are confusing to you then it's probably best if you re-read them until they make sense, or not do it at all! There's really no simpler way to describe it then what's in the tut.

Many people have been successful with the guy. Heres a small tut:

1) Install Homebrew via Zelda hack (make sure you are on 3.4)
2) Run Oct 23 fix
3) Use ios downgrader to install proper ios files
4) Install cios v7
5) Use wad manager 1.3 to install wads

Basic steps but pretty much it. The guide dicusses more detail.

I'm not sure about the nes/snes/etc games. Do a quick search, I'm sure that's been answered several times.

And yes, you will need to keep the SD card in the Wii, nothing is copied to the Wii, everything that allows you to play back ups is all on the card.

This is incorrect. You do not need to keep the SD card in if you install the wii gator 0.3 wad. It will put a icon on the dashboard. You only need the SD card in if you want to play the SNES games, etc. You will need to download the emulators and put them on your card.

I didn't install the wad or the channel. I followed the tutorial step by step and it never asked me to do that so I need to keep the SD card in. Did I do it wrong or something? Cause if I take my SD card out there's nothing in the HBC.

Get the wii gator wad and you won't even need homebrew anymore. It just has to be there to install the apps you want. The wii gator wad will make a channel and you'll just click on that instead of homebrew.

I read about that, but it seemed a bit risky. I didn't want to push my luck... I got it working using HBC so I left it alone. I wouldn't suggest taking any more risk than needed to softmod a wii. But that's just my personal opinion. Like I said, the tutorial doesn't advise you to do that so you have to keep your SD card in following the tut, that's why I said that.

What are you talking about? This is not stated as a risk. I have done it on 3 wii's. Actually from what I have read and see videos of, most people install the wad. Use wad manager to install it.

I'm just repeating what I've read. I don't remember where I read it but it said if you're changing anything to do with channels, including making one for wiigator, there's always a risk (even if it's only a small one.) Is this not true? I'd love to have a direct shortcut to the backup loader on the main screen!

It isn't necessary to install it as a channel. It is personal preference. I prefer to boot applications via Homebrew Channel so I can save as much space as I can on the Wii System menu for VC/WiiWare games.

Some users install VC/WiiWare games to the system and the Wii has limited space for these types of games. So I figured booting the WiiGator boot loader via Homebrew Channel would save space for VC/WiiWare games.

@merandom

If you used my guide then there is a link in one of my post to a site that has multiple WiiGator WAD files that can be installed as a channel. Make sure you get the Gamma version.

So is there a risk associated to adding it as a channel? If not, how would I go about doing it?

There is always a risk when messing with the system files of the Wii.

I updated the post above but might not have been quick enough. So you might not have read it.

In 1 of my post in my guide on installing the Wii Gator boot loader I linked to a site that had multiple boot loader WAD files. Go to that site and choose 1 of the Gamma version channels you like and download it.

Now you need to get WAD manager and install the WAD boot loader file with that.

That's what I thought. And my thoughts are that it's working fine the way it is and the 2 or 3 extra pushes of the button aren't killing me so I'm going to just leave it! :)

Thanks!

I've installed it on 3 systems and 4 will be tonight. Never had a problem or heard of anyone having issues when installing a channel. It's up to you.
