hello this is my first post on this site and i just want to say hi. i bought an xbox from my neighbor and it is pretty new. on day i put in halo 3 and on the menu it made a weird noise and the screen froze with static. i turned the xbox off and on and then it had 3 red lightd with the top right light not lit. i tried the penny trick whith the electrick tape and pennies but it still has the 3 red lights after i did the penny fix. i just need to know what i need to do to fix my xbox 360 thank you for your time. :)

Yep sounds like dead GPU, but you can always try the x-clamp fix, or a reflow.

do xclamp fix before giving up. there are many tutorials here. try check the ultimate stick that is at the top of the page here i think there are some links in that. most important part is cleaning the thermal paste and applying new paste and the right amount. i have fixed some this way so it isnt hopeless yet

btw this thread is a trick question... there is no "PERMANENT" fix.

Seriously, Donaldo's right. About the closest you can get to a perma-fix would be to have the CPU, GPU, and ANA chips professionally reflowed by someone with a rework station, similar to what is used in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndeq6cAA8MY

But, since the entire source of the problem is in the design of the motherboard and how the chips are mounted, even a professional repair isn't guaranteed permanent.

hrm wow that is a crazy youtube video... i've heard of reflow but even after watching that video and reading the description i don't get it..

they seem to be super-heating the CPU/GPU with that "reflow" machine... how does that fix things ?? the reflow machine shoots extremely hot air at the chip ?? and somehow it is repaired by it ?

confused...

bad solder+heat+time=bad connection between board and chip which= RROD

reflow means that it heats the chips so much that the solder melts(step6):Step Six: Step up temperature on air flow 3C every one second until the unit reaches 350C/360C. (The temperature at which solder reflows) Hold at 350C for 10 seconds for CPU, hold at 360C for 15 seconds for GPU.
the solder metls and flows back into the tiny crevices and cracks that have formed overtime and caused the rrod so when the solder cools down it is all nice and secure again holding the chips correctly....hopefully. chip could still be fried tho and there is no fixing that.

make sense?
i knew this already but i didnt know it was done with air. im guessing this isnt a real reflow station that ppl talk about but just a "super duper heatgun/breakfast griddle ghetto flowsation" ftw !1

The griddle is just a homemade preheat station so that superheating just the smaller area of a chip doesn't cause damage and flex to the motherboard and other components. That "super heatgun" is a professional reflow station, not just some hardware store heatgun. There are other types of reflow stations that use IR light, that one just happens to use hot air. It's far more precise than a heatgun where temp and airflow are concerned.

is it needed to reflow both cpu and gpu or is only the gpu required mostly. maybe doing both is a good idea to avoid having to do it over again.
i am wondering how much one of those professional heating stations cost.

The way I see it, if you have it apart to reflow one chip, you might as well get both, if not all 3 (ANA chip too.) You can get the same model reflow station in that video for 160-200. Check ebay, but avoid hong kong sellers. You'd also need to buy the right nozzles, but those are fairly inexpensive.
