hi i soft modded my xbox 360 almost 5 months ago and i had made plenty of back up that worked in the past. all of the sudden none of them don't want to work. when i put the disc into the tray on the xbox dashboard it says reading disc and then says open tray. i keep opening and close it and it doesn't read the discs that worked before. DVD and originals work fine. i have tried a different burner and new set of verbatim's and still no luck. how come it just stop working?

cause the 360 is designed to run those discs, burning games we do not have access to the same media that ms uses. thats why some ppl say verbatim is the best way cause the theory is it isnt as hard for the disc to read, but i do not think there is definitive answer to this.
If you send me questions on Live about modding or anything related i will block you. Dont be an idiot.

I'm having the exact same problem as you. originals and dvds work too. My 360 was firmwared in Jan 07 by some guy. I dont know if its old firmware for me? (anyone know if old firmware would cause an issue?)
its starting to annoy the hell outta me. Like around christmas the backups would take maybe 20-30 tries just to load. Now, they have stopped completly.
anyone know if a dvd lens cleaning disk would help?

It could help, but from what I have heard is that playing burnt media on any type of laser is harder for the laser to read than an original disc. If cleaning the laser don't work you could always try using the pot tweak and if that don't work you might have to replace the laser.

That's true. It's pretty common for any brand new laser to start acting dodgy within a year if it's been playing burnt games.

Well,it could be a combination of both a bad laser, and bad media.

I've never done pot-weaking. Is it hard to do?
I'm going to get a dvd lens cleaning kit. if it works i'll let you know.
if that fails, i'll try the pot-tweaking trick. I mean, whats the worst that could happen? the lens is already broken :P
oh how do i update the firmware? do you have to remove the 360 drive and install it in the pc? (I got someone to firmware it in the first place)

It takes more for a laser to be able to read a burned copy versus a retail copy. It's very possible for a properly flashed 360 to be able read a retail game and not a burnt one.
