Transferring Video From DVR to External HD

Dish Network allows you to connect an external HD to their DVR to transfer programs you've recorded. However in the process the DVR formats the HD. The HD can then only be used to play the video back thru the Sat Rcvr. Essentially all you're doing is expanding the capacity of the DVR. You cannot then connect the HD to your PC to transfer the video file and subsequently burn a DVD. Does anyone have a workaround out there?
