tv-out on radeon 9200LS is grey

i'm trying to set up my tv as a second monitor but it's almost always just grey. one strange thing, i turned on the tv and there was colour, and in a few minutes the colour was gone again, so i know it's possible. help please?

edit:

i noticed it turns purple (from blue), then flickers, then turns grey, quite reliably now, every time i turn the tv off and then on.
