So I've had my Wii since launch, but haven't followed the Homebrew scene much lately. I installed the Twilight Hack / Homebrew Channel over the summer, and then recently updated (when I say recently, I mean within the past 2 weeks). Basically: I have a US Wii, with the HBC.
Now, I'm looking into playing backed up games, and I had a few questions:
1. According to this guide (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/735325), I need to run some coding first to allow me to install/uninstall WADS again so I can install the loader channel. Is this correct? Am I missing any steps, or should I FULLY follow this guide (aside from the fact that I already have the HBC)?
2. What is the best media to burn backups on to? I've read that the media DOES matter in this case, so I want to know some opinions on which discs work for whom.
3. Is this still being updated, meaning will there be future releases and such? How about the possibility that they achieve something similar to the PSP scene, where an ISO can be loaded directly from a Memory card/USB drive/External HD?
Thanks for any help! Just trying to be on the safe side before I try anything.
1) You only have to install IOS16 to reenable the the ability to install wads if you're using the oct23 version of firmware 3.3 or firmware 3.4. If you dont have one of those firmwares then you dont need to do that step.
2) Verbatum is highly recommended by nearly everyone here. You're welcome to try other brands, some wii's seem to do fairly well reading even cheap disks (like mine) but many many others have real problems with many brands of DVDs. DVD-R is also recommended over DVD+R in most cases.
3) Wiigator is only on the gamma release, which means its still an early test version and not even on version 1.0 yet. I would expect more updates from it in the future.
And theres a couple products coming out soon that claim to offer the kind of functionality you're asking about. If you believe the marketing hype anyway. Personally I'm reserving judgment until I see a working one.
The flatmii is a device that will support streaming of games from your PC to the wii via USB.
And the wiizii is a similar device that instead plays the games directly from an SATA hard drive..
One other thing I forgot to ask is actually about burning the DVD's: I don't have a burner for my PC, but my Mac does (OSX 10.3.9, I think). Assuming it's as simple as burning an ISO to the disc, I should be able to use Toast Titanium or Fast DVD copy, correct? Otherwise I'll just experiment on my own and see what works.
I've found a possible way to burn Wii games on my mac, so I'll see how that works as soon as I get the channel fixed and ready.
However, as always I've fun into a bit of a snag. Using THIS link, under "Wii Fix Guide", I'm having a problem with step 4. The guide says to use "Custom Manager", which is not available for some reason in my HBC. So, I just used WAD manager as it says. However, cIOS_Fix.wad does not whish to open. I get an error (I'll get the exact error shortly), and can't progress. Any ideas?
EDIT: The error shows up as (ret = -2011) on Step 4
So I've been enjoying the ability to backup games, which work perfectly! Now I have a question which I couldn't find when I tried a search, regarding Guitar Hero.
Back with the PS2, there was the ability to rewrite the game and include your own songs/fret tracks. Now that we can burn Wii games, I was curious if there was any way to edit my copy (or the ISO) and play with some custom songs?
