Im trying to use the recently discovered method of using USBextreme to load ps2 isos.
I'm using a 60gb ps3 and have swap magic 3.6 plus and an external hard drive (not sure of this is compatable though)
I've put usbextreme on the root of the external HDD and now it says in the tutorial im using to load swap magic and press up on the d-pad and press L1 to load from flash drive, but when I press this nothing happens at all. I've tried putting the USBextreme files on my Lexar Flash drive aswell but nothing happens at all.
I'm probably doing something stupid and obvious but I just cant see it :D Has anyone got this to work for them?
Thanks.

For one, it's apparent that USBExtreme is only meant for PS2s (last generation), not PS3s (current generation).

For another, as the link above suggests, the product is also apparently very, very horrible. Most folks from there say the HDLoader is much better.

If you want to play PS2 backups on the PS3, the only way (currently) is through the swap switch.

I think thats a different usbextreme than what i'm talking about.
I didn't buy anything, I got the files from ps3hax.
It involves using swapmagic to boot up an ELF file from the USB drive and then load the ISO file stored on the drive
Its very similar to running the Snes and Genesis emulators from swap magic instead of from Linux that was discovered a while ago, but instead of running snesstation or Pgen it runs Usbextreme instead.

He's speaking of the recently discovered USBAdvance loader for the PS3.

http://ps3hax.net/

Do you have a 20/60GB NTSC launch PS3? Cause if you don't, USBAdvance won't work.

Whoa, what's this new thing you're talking about?

Huh... that's pretty neat. This makes me want to finally get a Swap Magic now. It'd make playing FFIX a heck of a lot easier. Not to mention saving me some wear and tear on the discs (that and almost all my other PS1 games are all starting to... I dunno, "peel" at the edges... kinda freaky).

Or is it meant ONLY for PS2 backups?

Hmm.. Not sure if it just works with PS2 games, or what. I know for a fact it doesn't work with backed up PS3 games (which is no surprise). I haven't had a chance to try it because I haven't obtained a swap magic disk.. yet. =)

So... how does it work? I'm guessing it interacts with the EE of the PS3 in some way (which I was thinking was going to be needed in order to do any sort of iso loading), but I'm curious as to what this little program thing does.

But anyway. Now that I actually want to get this, what would you say is a good place to get a SM disc? I'm not too keen on any of the places the site is listing and I'd rather get some member feedback. (Wouldn't want to buy something like a 3.8 and get a 3.0 instead...)

Yea I tried using usbextreme when the PS3 first came out and it didnt work. Thats cool tho that they got it to work now. I have like 40 PS2 games saved to a HDD that I used to play on the PS2.

I just have to find it now...in my garage somewhere.

I remembered that the PS2 had 1.0 usb ports so the games will lag during cgi movies and sometimes freeze. Since the PS3 has 2.0 USB ports...will it play smoothly now? Just wondering.

PS3...it only does everything(that Sony allows it to)

Still, it's only some good news if you have a launch console whch had the emotion chips in them, for the rest of us, atm, it means we still have to use our PS2s.

Why wont Sony release the software emulation on the firmware updates? Is it because some people are still buying PS2s which are helping them make some proft unlike the PS3 console?

Sony can't just release a firmware update, because PS2 emulation was never done through software alone. All BC PS2 have the PS2 graphics chip in them. The launch US and Japan units have the emotion engine aka PS2 CPU to go along with the GPU.

I know it only works on NTSC and JPN PS3s but someone said if my Pal PS3 is a launch one it might work, and they gave a list of what serial numbers the launch ones had (just the first part of it) and mine was one of them.
Some people tried it and got to the USBextreme screen but it wasnt picking up their device. So I thought if I could even just get to that part I could be ready for when they release the PAL version (which it says their working on)
I wonder if this could lead to emulators being used in this way like PS1, PS2 for non BC units, gamecube, N64 etc.
I hope it only goes this far though and doesnt lead to PS3 backups.

Quick question regarding Swap Magic, then, since that's the only piece that actually needs buying (on my part, at least).

(And I have no doubt that these have been asked before, so bear with me.)

1.) Which Swap Magic (CD/DVD) would I need to insert? I'm guessing the 3.6 and on versions all still use a CD and DVD version for the two different media. If that's wrong, feel free to correct me.

2.) Where would you suggest I buy one? Like I said before, I'm not too keen on checking out sites that are listed on the official site, even IF they're listed on the official site. I'd rather get some user input.

3.) I actually had a question here, but I forgot it in the midst of thinking, so ignore this.

Thanks all.

hahahhh at no.3 :D
Yeah, you need 3.6 or higher and get a dvd version and cd version. If your interested in using it on the PS2 aswell, if you have a fat PS2 get it with the slide tool, if you have the slim one I think you need some other tool or you can get the flip top case.
I got mine off eBay about 3 years back but I dont see them on there anymore. If you go to the tutorial on ps3hax I think it has a link of where to buy it from. Also you can probably trust the sites on the swap magic site, they must be trusted if there on the official site

In my opinion this is a great thing that has happened. You no longer have to install the swap switch to play ps2 backups. Backups are not hard on the laser because they are in iso format and not on cd/dvd media. Also this gives us some homebrew capability with out hacking the PS3 side of things. Also I do not think that Sony will patch swap magic because they have not tried to block it from working on the ps3 before. I just ordered mine and I can finaly play all of the versions of Guitar Hero I have on my PS3.

A new version was just released for PAL versions and another new version called 0.2b that doesnt need anything installed on the virtual memory card to work. I havnt had chance to test it yet though, since its 2.35am and ive gotta get up for college -_-
Sorry I cant provide a link because im on the PS3 posting this (I wish they would add a copy/paste option) but you can get the files by going to ps3hax.
I'll test this tomorrow and see if it works. Someone reported they got FFX running on an 80gb pal console so hopefully it'll work for me. A compatibilty list hasnt been done yet but hopefully someone will make one. I really hope this opens up options for new emulators and homebrew but I wonder how much can be done without full access to the RSX.
I cant really see sony patching this either, wouldnt they have to somehow block BC since its just read as PS2 disc?
Anyway, im going to bed now, another 4 hours sleep night :(

Well, I finally got my PS3 to load the usbloader, but it cant seem to pick up my external hardrive where ive stored a game, it'll only pick up my memory stick which is only 512mb and obviously not enough to fit a game. I can boot the elf from the HDD but it wont read in the program. :(
I suppose my only choice is to buy a bigger pendrive, anyone know what ones would be compatible?

That depends, did the person say he had an old 80GB console which have software emulation for PS3 games, or the new ones which are currently on the market which dont?

If this works on the new 80GB ones I'll finally be able to put away my PS2 and free up some space!
