I just opened our new Wii trying to verify which is the best chip and clip for my system. I have a GC2-D2E with the new metal clip(with number 2 on it) on the back of the drive. The 3 chips that seem to be the most popular are D2Pro9 V3, Wasabi V3, and Wiikey2. I have heard that both have some issues such as the eject issue. I also wanted some suggestions of the best place to get the chip presoldered to the wiiclip. I was thinking of ordering from modchipcentral.com.

Is it an epoxy drive or non epoxy.

If its an epoxy drive get yourself a D2B drive (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.19842) and a wiikey 1.

And than sell your old D2E drive. Since you can't solder I really doubt you could get epoxy off the drive without screwing it up.

If its not epoxy than go for D2Sun factory soldered. Those are cheap (as the D2Sun factory solders it) and they work with D2E.

There is NO epoxy. I've been debating between the new Wasabi Zero, Wiikey 2, D2Pro9 V3, or D2Sun V1.53 with on off switch. All with wiiclip. Haven't been able to get a really good idea of which is the best. I know being able to update the software with a DVD might be a nice feature. I have heard of some issues with eject on some chips. Not sure which is best for compatibility with backups. Haven't been able to find a good comparison of all the new chips that are available.

Like I said if you want to use a wii-clip than D2Sun is a no brainer. They were made in conjunction with the wii-clip team (hence the red wii-clip) and you can get them soldered from the factory. They are by far the most compatible with the wii-clip because quite simply they were made with the wii-clip in mind.

Modchipcentral is nice and I have shopped around and they have good prices. I could sell you a D2Sun when my shippment comes in but that looks like it might take up to a month so if were you I would go with the D2Sun.

Its a rip but its less of a rip than anywhere else. Damn volumerate takes foooooorever.

[Link Removed...I probably should link that here.]

The solderless WiiKey2 is probably the best choice of the previous generation of mod chips but there are also new chips available that are solderless and easier to install.

With a WiiKey2 ( more info at http://www.wiikey2.net ) you don't have to worry about bricking your Wii because it has 'ascoreguard' built into the firmware to protect your Wii against updates from other regions, which in the past bricked some Wii's.

There are now 3 new mod chips to choose from in the next generation of solderless mod chips, these are: DriveKey, FlatMod and Wasabi DX. These new chips don't have the eject issue. The drive speed on the new chips is limited to 3X but this has been proven not to affect load times.

All of these new mod chips have a load of features including compatability with all versions of the Wii. THIS ARTICLE edited by ddp lists all the features of these new generation of modchips.

Hey KingJude

Dont worry about buying a replacement drive cost too much $$$ better off getting one of the new generation modchips eg. DriveKey, FlatMod or Wasabi DX. Check this article:
Choosing the right modchip for your version of Nintendo Wii: DMS, D2A, D2B D2C, D2C2, D2E, D3, D2NOTHING Models edited by ddp

These new modchips plug into the ribbon cable so you don't need to worry about soldering or clipping onto the drive chip.

is there any way to know if its a eproxy without opening to console?

Does Wasabi Zero Wireless fit on both eproxy and non eproxy drives?

Thanks

Hi Torry

The Wasabi Zero will fit onto non epoxy drives.

You could try http://www.wiidrives.com/list with your serial number but it is not 100% guarantied.

To be on the safe side and for epoxy drives I would suggest the Wasabi DX or FlatMod or DriveKey

Try here as well:

http://www.modsupplier.com/catalog/solde...chip-p-284.html

Scroll down to below the pic of the screwdriver for the wii serial checker.

My wii,it said 99% non epoxy D2E so no need to crack open till clip arrived.

The Wii I picked up last week,50% shot it was GC2-D2E with epoxy/25% chance GC2R-D2A and 25% chance at GC2-D2C. I had to open that Wii up to find out.
