I haven't whined about this problem for a while, but I haven't given up on trying to find a solution. I've a Sapphire-sold Radeon 9000 64DDR VIVO card that is supposed to support both PAL and NTSC. That's what ATI says, that is what Sapphire says, and that's what the software that came with the card says. And I'm sure it does, in some way, but something's amiss anyway.
I've been trying to hook my European-made Playstation to the card in order to be able to use it here in America. I know, why not just buy an American Playstation? Because I've about 20 games for it which I feel not so inclined to buy again as US (NTSC) versions. Anyhow, hooking the console up to the card via composite produces an extremely flickery image. Oddly enough, the image is not flickery when recorded, but this doesn't help me much as I need to be able to see the video feed as I play, no? When playing FF7, the only time there is any relief to the flickering is when I move the character vertically on the screen, but the relief only lasts as long as the screen is moving vertically. Other than that, the flickering is so bad it is hard on the eyes.
Now here's where it gets frustrating. I also own a Hauppauge WinTV card, which is an OLD PCI card and officially does not support PAL at ALL. It has a label on it which clearly states that it has an NTSC decoder, period, no support for PAL. But with that old card, I can get the image come up from my Playstation. No flicker, there is a little bit of a sawtooth thing going on which I can fix well by selecting a "2-field Deinterlace". Why not use this card then if it works so great, you ask? Because for one the colours are a bit out of whack (there is too much red) as the card isn't supposed to really support PAL, but not only that, the card only supports capture at 320x240 resolution, which as I am sure you can imagine looks none too great when you blow it up to full-screen in order to play a game.
Then there is the new Radeon 9000 that has awesome colours, crisp image...but flickery as hell. And this card is actually supposed to support PAL.
Actually, I'm pretty sure it does, but it doesn't seem to do much of a job deinterlacing, which is the problem as far as I can tell. Is there a tweak or anything that you can think of that I could try to get this working. It'd really make my month, to say the least. I haven't found any deinterlacing settings whatsoever in the VideoIN utility.
At this point I am not even really hoping to solve this as much as I am hoping to learn WHY this is so. WHAT have Hauppauge done differently with their older-than-grandpa card than ATI with the 9000 series?
Oh, and for some reason I haven't been able to get SVideo IN to work at ALL with the card. Could it be a hardware issue and how can I verify this?
I'd appreciate any help.
