I have a ps3 and have ripped some dvds into one large file renamed as .mpg (vs vob)and was watching them thru tversity folders yet was having a bit of trouble if I wanted to rewind or fast forward more than 1.5 speed things would "freezeup".

I had an idea to clear off this little 120 gig western digital usb hard drive I have here and move the file folders with the mpg files onto that, hook that upto the ps3 and see if the movies would play better vs having them run thru the wireless tversity setup.

Will this work? Is there anything I need to do (convert the drive to fat32 vs ntfs, will the ps3 even see this drive once connected to the usb port on frontside of unit etc)?

Figured I would ask since someone out there has no doubt tried this before...

Your drive needs to be formatted to FAT32 and the movies should be no larger than 4GB.

I grabbed swiss knife, converted the drive to primary fat 32, used the ehow info listed here

http://www.ehow.com/how_2222076_add-exte...laystation.html

Do I need to rename this drive (currently its called H: SWISNIFE1

I created the 4 folders it said to make (Photo, Music, Game, Video) now my question is can I make sub folders within these main folders?

Movie/Ghostbusters/ripmovie.mpg
Movie/Back_To_The_Future/ripmovie.mpg

Music/Beastie_Boys/song1.mp3
Music/Rush/song1.mp3

or do I have to rename each movie or song file and place under the main folder only (to get the ps3 to see it properly).

Movie/ghostbusters.mpg
Movie/backtothefuture.mpg

Music/beastieboyssong1.mp3
Music/rushsong1.mp3

Hoping I can use the subfolder method (save alot of time renaming everything).

Guess I can try it both ways and see what happens, also do i need to turn off the ps3 then restart it once i connect this external hd to the front usb port?

And does it matter which of the 4 front ports I connect it to?

Not sure about the sub folders, give it a try with a few files. You do not need to turn off to system before plugging in... doesn't matter which USB port.
