I bought a Wii back this summer, and have decided to try the soft-mod.

I have been reading alot of things about the soft mod.

I have some questions.

First, how do I find out what firmware version is on my Wii.

I want to try the Twilight Hack if my version is firmware is ok.

I have purchased the Twilight game and the SD card, just wanting to start off right and not screw anything up.

So, I wanted to start off with the most simple thing, determining my firmware.
thanks.

Seriously, if you dont even know how to check your firmware, I would stay clear of the softmod unless you want a nice brick on your hands

Go to Settings -> System Settings. It's in the top right corner.

First off, why did you buy zelda? That isn't necessary, you could have rented it as it's only needed one time. Second, make sure you are on 3.4 firmware before getting started. Here are the steps I take:

1) Connect wii to wi-fi and run system update to 3.4
2) Prepare SD card formatted as FAT32 with the following apps - ciosv7, Zelda hack beta 2, ios downgrader, custom manager 1.3, cios_fix, ios257, and wii gator wads
3.) Put in RETAIL game of Zelda play for like 20 secs until it says it's saving game.
4) Exit zelda and look at the back for the correct verson, is there a 1 or 0?
5) Go into data management and delete the save game you just created
6) Load the beta 2 Zelda hack from SD card in your region
7) Start zelda game again and you'll notice 2 zelda load games. If you are USA, choose load game "0"
8) Once game starts, go talk to the man standing there and it will begin the homebrew install - click the "1" button on your remote to accept it until the wii goes back to the main page
9) Once homebrew is install, click on the channel and go to the custom manager 1.3 and install IOS 257
10) Exit and wii will reboot, go back to homebrew again and choose custom manager 1.3 again and run CIOS_Fix.WAD, then Wii gator.wad, then exit again.
11) Choose IOS downgrader in homebrew and run that (this will take a few minutes- grab a beer)
12) Go back into the homebrew one last time after ios downgrader is done and choose CIOSV7 (has sonic icon) and install this.
13) You're are ready to go on 3.4
14) Insert backup game, and click on wii gator icon to launch game (note if you are running NTSC box and trying to play out of region game, hold in "B", go to config options and FORCE NTSC to on or the pal game will not play)
15) If you are downloading games, I recommend downloading in your region. Example, if you are in the USA, download NTSC games only. This will make it so you don't have to FORCE NTSC on and less chance of a brick.
16) This is the basic steps, let me know if I missed anything. This guide would be for a complete up to date system as of 1/28/2009

thanks for the step by step, I appreciate it. I bought Zelda because I like the game, and I read it could be used for the homebrew.

My firmware was only 3.1U

I have upgraded my firmware to 3.4, as stated. Formatted my SD card and downloaded all the apps.

When I get back from work, I'll post back when I finish the whole process.

Thanks again

No problem. It's actually the easiest hack ever. Heck I've made some extra $ from some buddies by doing it.
