There are plenty of Xbox hard drive shells out there. There are a few posts about Western Digital 120GB hard drives to use, but what if I want to go bigger?
If I wanted to play games from HDD, guessing that using the DVD all the time will ruin the laser, and probably add to the heat in the box.
Could I go with a 300, or 500Gb hard drive? Will that mean i'm more likely to get banned from Live? What RPM should I be looking for etc..
you can only go as big as the largest "official" xbox hard drive... which at the moment is 120gb... this is due to the fact we use the security sector image from that drive to flash our W.D. Bevs drives...
this is until microsoft releases something bigger... which i really doubt they will do anytime soon cause the 120gb is kinda pricey when you pay full price retail... imagine them releasing a 250gb HD and charging what... $275.00 who the *** is gonna pay that...

The process involves basically spoofing the 360 into thinking that it is an official m$ hard drive. I believe you actually change the firmware, since after i did it my computer no longer recognized it as a western digital. This change only seems to work with specifically with the western digital scorpio drives. I would imagine you could get a bigger one, do the mod, but since that security sector is only for a 120gb (max) then the drive would be partitioned as if it were only 120 gb, so it would be pointless to pay more for anything bigger.
So basically if your going to do it buy the 120 gb scorption drive, i think its like 1200bevs theres something after that but you could find it w/a simple google search.
I did this mod and i love my 120gb hard drive much more than my puny 20 gig, so i would recommend this if you have the ambition. It is a little tricky when modifying the hex though.

good reason to buy it pre-formatted. its only like 5 bucks more on ebay like that, hardly seems worth it to buy a stock one and mess around with it for 5 little dollars.
