Circuit City drops prices again

article published on 1 February, 2009

According to a new email sent out yesterday, the bankrupt retailer Circuit City has dropped the price on many of their items, finally giving some good sales on items they must liquidate before March 31st. The retailer is dropping the price of all plasma TVs by 25 percent, all LCD TVs by 20 percent, 20 percent off most digital cameras and 40 percent off "car audio" systems. That of ... [ read the full article ]

Online buying is the Best way for any electronics. I laugh when I go into a best buy and see people spending money on items. I mean kmon people, online is SO much cheaper. Especially Tvs. Even the 'sale' items can't compete with newegg, tigerdirect, etc.

That is true you even if sometimes they are more and sometimes they are less at least you know what you are paying no matter if you buy it on Saturday or Sunday not like a retail stores that change their pricing weekly.

Yes, this is exactly what I do. I know what I want and wait for it to drop. Almost never fails. Keep in mind I worked at Best Buy for a while. I know what I'm doing here. Also, it helps if you know people who work there. When you buy as much as I have, they'll work with you.
That's another point though, who do you know at Newegg? Exactly. What most individuals do not understand is that if there is no store to go to, then the discovery of new items is harder for the general public to experience. What Javan does is the worst possible thing to do for a local store. Not only do you not purchase it, you use the store for the experience. It costs money to have the B&M store, so it's going to add to the cost of the product. You probably just wasted the guys time too, which costs them money. Shop where you like, but on-line is not the best way for me.
WDTV takes it a step further by buying the product and returning it. He ruins the capability to sell that item for full price. That's why stores do the restocking fee.

Well that is a good price but you still pay taxes so its still slightly more than online and I wouldn't trust Bestbuy to install it. They are almost as bad as the geek squad morons. But yeah so you either wait and pray you find a good deal and get to the store on time before the TVs get sold out....or you can buy it any day of the week online.

Just to clarify I didn't say I go to stores and see the product and then buy it online. I suggested to sgriesch that if he wants to see a product before he buys it he is not required to see it in a store and buy it there. He can see it if he likes it go to other stores and check online and take the best deal.

I personally like to look online and read reviews to see what the best products are then shop around online and in stores for the best price. I don't even care if I see it in person.

meh...sales are fluke. You have to be looking at the right place at the right time. And have money available in that window of time. And they suck you in with financing. I personally don't want to finance a TV for 3 years. The prices online are more stable and reliabe.
Financing = "If you pay it off in 3 years, then you don't pay interest"

It's the same as if you had the money in your pocket. Not a bad deal at all, it's the same as a loan, only a smaller loan. Who buys a car with cash? Unless it's a junk or you're rich! LOL.

Seriously, BB and others aren't bad, but you have to be a keen shopper. Remember, they're there to make money. Sales do exist. Sometimes I used to scratch my head when customers would come in and specifically ask for a clearance model that was sold out in the entire region! That's going too far. Besides, how do they know this stuff?

lol...yes, I understand the concept. It's still a bill that I have to make payments on every month. Interest or not. Not saying there is something wrong with that. That may be a great deal for some. But to have a bill for three years.....other than a car loan....well, I just wouldn't want something that bad. Maybe a year. Something like that, they count on you screwing up and forgetting a payment (which the odds are higher the longer the loan is). Even if it's $10/month. I don't trust myself. Not all banks have the option of automatic monthly checking account deductions. And then you get slapped with fees and accrued interest. Not to diminish it's value to others. I've done some zany things to finance things and pay no interest.

Anyway, off topic...this is not about how people finance things.

Back on topic though....how many people really care about having a salesperson to talk to? It's a foreign concept to me. My parents or grandparents might, but electronic sales seems like a dying art. Bottom line is, most sales people don't have the expertise or knowledge on a product. Not to knock any of you who worked at BB or CC. There are always exceptions. Time and time again, I've never been able to get my questions answered. I avoid sales people at all costs at any store. I find that unless they can point me in the right direction or tell me the price of an item, they would just waste my time. I only go to the store when I know what I want anyway. I don't window shop or impulse buy. Am I a product of a different generation? Over the years, we've all seen businesses streamlined and loss in experience and expertise. Are my views narrow? Should I get out more? Just responding to sgriesch's comment on "who do you know at Newegg?" My answer to that is that I don't care. Who do I know at Best Buy. Who did I know at Circuit City? Nobody. I'm satisfied with the customer service by stranger on the phone from who knows where, as long as I get what I need for the right price. Again, am I a product of a streamlined business model that has taken the personality out of shopping altogether?

I've been to at least 4 circuit city stores in the last month and there's nothing but crap left or t.v.s that are still more expensive than online stores!

It's good to use the internet to get educated on the product. I still like to physically see it.

I'm heading over to one during my lunch break today. I'm in the market for a 20" 720p TV. I'll see how low they've gone, if they have any left. Right now, I have one online for about $250.

That's true. Keep the money in an interest bearing account. Use their money, while you make money.
As for the sales, you just have to know what to look for in the ad. There are sales out there, but if everyone shops at Newegg, then there won't be as many places around to compete with, and Newegg will begin to raise their prices.

emugamer,

You are right about the "automatic" online bill payments. Best Buy is the WORST of them in this category.

HSBC runs their financing, and is notorious for making due dates fall on weekends, when you CANNOT schedule them for payment, even a day in advance, like Friday. Instead they want you to "express pay" which has a $15 additional charge, or you can take a late fee hit for paying a day late (ie. earliest day you can schedule) and in my case, the late charge is almost double my minimum payment, for my lowly account.

NOTE: this is related to the article, because HSBC also ran the CC credit cards and considering that aspect, is one reason I steered clear of CC's financing.

This TV is $899 from Amazon with free shipping. At Circuit City today, it was reduced to a whopping $979.99. And that is with the 20% discount. I did end up buying something though. Guitar Hero World Tour for $40 and two Les Paul black controllers for $30 each. I think video games and accessories are the best deal at this kind of sale. They will only go lower, and new video games almost never get reduced by this much.

Blu rays were down by 30% also. I still need to wait until they go down a little more. I would buy one for 50% off. They are almost all $30+.

BEST BUY is THE GEEK SQUAD MORONS. I wouldn't let those idiots hook up my washer much less my TV or network. Best Buy has internally stated that they target "customer w/ little knowledge". So, there is the issue: You go to buy a PC and Johnny Dumb**** doesn't know the difference between a 9800GT, 9800GTX (it's not the "X"), and a radeon 4850. Johnny's making $10.00 / hour, and the customer typiclly goes home with an overpriced HP filled with bloatware. It works, if you nothing about what you are purchasing.

Yep, the accessories are what is marked up the most. Those $100 Monster Cables are really only about $20 at the old employee discount. They still made money on those controllers you bought. If you can get it for cheaper than you normally would, then you did alright.

My CC credit card runs through Chase Bank. But I guess it isn't going to get run through anymore :-)

I did get it cheaper. Those controllers retail for $59.99 each. I essentially got them for half off - or buy 1 get one free, if you will. I don't care if they made money or not. Something like that I wouldn't buy used (who knows what other people do with their controllers) so I'm happy paying only $30 for each new controller. As for the game, I could have gotten it used off Amazon for $35 including shipping. But for $5 more, I'm happy to buy it new. I'm not sure how much they were selling the game/guitar bundle for, but I wasn't intereseted. I've read that the official guitar is slightly larger and has issues.
