Whatever program I use to print the dvd covers either scanned or not, it is either scaled or a part of the picture is cutoff. The cover is 10.8" in length. I know the minimum top printer margin is 0.5 while the bottom is 0.07". Anybody know of a way to avoid these margins or is buying 8.5X14 paper the only way to get full sized dvd covers?

I've tried that, but when it prints out, the image is reduced by 0.3 inches. Does this happen to you?

The same thing happens to me whatever program i used it gets cut off. I used all the programs mentioned in this forum. Is there anyway you can print closer to the edge of the paper. The cover always gets cut off on the right but it looks like theres still just enough room to print the cover. If anybody could help i would appreciate it. Otherwise i guess I will just have to buy 8.5x14 paper.

I think it depends on what your printer can do. My Epson has a box in the paper properties that I check to print edge to edge with no borders. Covers come out full size. If I forget to change it, I loose about 3/4 of an inch off the back side which doesn't really matter there. The 8.5 X 14 paper would probably work if you can't change the printer settings any other way.

Hi,

To print my DVD covers for backup discs I use Nero 6, which has a template inwhich you just insert the picture into, drag to fit.Perfect size everytime

I have been using Dvd Cover Print for a little while now, it lets you pick the paper size and adjust the margins. It also allows you to print for different case sizes. For example single, triple(slim), 4/5 disc, triple (slim), Thinpak single and double, and even 6/7 disc. The 6/7 disc size works great for a full season of a tv show, but you have to use the 8-1/2 x 14" paper for it. I like having the options for all the different case sizes.

This is a major problem and one that does not get addressed enough. I have been down this road so I can help you all out a great deal.

First of all, if your printer does not allow edge to edge printing then you have a certain type of problem If your printer does allow for edge to edge printing then you have another problem.

Lets start with the first problem: Your printer can not print all the way from edge to edge on your 8.5 x 11 paper. I have only forund one solution. Take a standard sheet of paper and cut off 3 inches from the length so that the cut piece is now 8.5 x 3. Take a piece of masking tape that is not too sticky and tape it to the length of your 8.5 x 11 sheet making it 8.5 x 14. Indicate on your printing preferences that the paper size is now legal and not letter size (now its 8.5 x14) insert it into the printer and print. It will now print the fulllength of the 8.5 x 11 because it thinks that you are printing within the middle of the sheet and you will get a full sized printer insert.

I did this for about a year and got fed up with it. My HP printed excellent hi res quality but, I got tired of having to tape a piece of paper to fool my printer into thinking it was a 8.5 x 14 piece of paper.

My New Canon printer can print edge to edge but, it requires a different solution.

My artist friend created a template for me with 4 black squares on all 4 corners of the page. The reason for this is that if I dragged my cover into photoshop and clicked on "print edge to edge" I got a cover that was 8.5 x11 and was far too large to put into any cover. If I didn't click edge to edge the printer would downsize it making it too short. By using the template and then clicking edge to edge, it thinks that teh 4 squares are part of the image so printing edge to edge actually prints me out a perfect size cover everytime. In fact, I actually prefer to shrink it down to 7.1 x 10.6 because that is the exact size of teh insert and not the standard 7.25 x 11 you get when printing it out any other way.

If anyone wants the template just give me a place to upload it and you can all use it. The guy who made it is a professional graphic artist but, it is fairly simple to make. It even has the outlines of the cover so you can drag any cover dead center everytime within seconds and the lines do not appear in the print, they are in the backround or just underneath the artwork. Very slick.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A lot of work for an easy job.
I use a program called image expert. I download the files from:
http://www.cdcovers.cc.com
save them and then got to the print setup page.
make it landscape (horizontal) then you can specify the exact size in either cm or inches.
measure a cover lenghwise and widthwise to be sure.
I usually add a couple of mm as you're likely to trim it a little too much when cutting.
easy as that. I've had over 50 perfect covers, each in less than 2 mins using this method.
hope this helps.

ericbee is correct. If your printer can't do it, no software solution will help.

Guys what you are neglecting to understand is that some printers cannot print the full length of a piece of paper. Either because the printheads cannot do it, the printers software wont allow it or the printer requires a certain amount of paper to pull it through which cannot be printed on.

If your printer does not have these limitations then you dont have any issue saving the file and hitting print. However, I would venture to bet that most of you don't even realize you have a problem but, try measuring the final print and seeing if it is in fact, 7.25 x 10.8. Don't be surprised when it isn't and most of the covers in your cases will be 1/4-1/2 inch short. While most people aren't so particular, others like me are and I want the printed cover to fit edge to edge top to bottom.

I hope both of you aldav45 and viper6699 be sure to follow up with your findings on this thread after you measure the covers your printer produces. The model and brand of your printer would also be helpful in determining if you are telling the truth or just don't notice the flaws in the printer.

About half way through these posts I stated it all depended on if your printer can print edge to edge. If you have one that doesn't, spend $2 or $3 dollars and buy a pack of 8.5X 14 paper and your problems are all solved. As Viper & Aldav stated, any photo program can do the job. Why make things harder on yourselves. We're all here just trying to help.

Jerry, you wanna make 100 bucks? You show me any website in the US that sells glossy 8.5 x14 photo paper and I will send you the reward. I looked for over a year and found dozens of sizes but not a single palce anywhere sold 8.5 x 14 GLOSSY photo paper. Yes, matte paper can be found but, I use paper with a gloss to more closely replicate what the studios use, a coated shiny stock.

As far as borderless printing goes, maybe you can tell me how your printer can print a 7.25 x 10.8 jpeg cover at the borderless setting without having the entire image blown up to fill the page borderless? In other words, the setting is designed to take an image and print it from edge to edge on a letter size piece of paper. By not using a template and just "importing" the photo and clicking "borderless print" I have never seen a printer that was smart enough to know that I wanted to trick it into printing bordeless but, yet retain a significant border to keep the image sized correctly.

I can't wait to hear the answers to these questions.

erm, I don't wanna sound harsh but maybe a new printer is what you need. If you're encountering all these problems a few bucks outlay may save you hours and hours of un-neccesary work.

with regard to ericbee's post, with a decnt printer and the correct software you can decide EXACTLY what size the final output will be!!
so it's never gonna be too small. it will be exactly right every time.
another thin I have noticed is that you need to match the size of the print to thje manufacturer of the DVD case, some use a thick joint at the edge of the box whereas some use a thin one resulting in a couple of mm difference.
another thing is to SIZE IT IN CENTIMETRES as you can "fine tune" the size much easier.

Using cm's does make it easier to fine tune the sizes. Those nutty Americans (of which I am one so don't go nuts on me)just have to be different sometimes the Metric system works great but we are not in the habit of using it so we forget to try it.

Ok, I use a high quality, bright white REGULAR paper to print my covers. I print in photo quality. Once placed behind the clear dvd box cover its hard to tell the difference unless you pull both the printed and original out of the cover. Yes there is a slight difference, but who cares. I use Micrografx Picture Plublisher which I size the print to 10.8 inces X 7.2 inches. I flip it 90 degrees so the front is on top and print. Takes maybe 2 minutes to size and flip. We are talkng covers for DVD copies so who cares if they are GLOSSY or NOT. Its your choice. This is all on 8.5 X 11 paper.

Jerry
