Can anyone point me in the right direction to mod a WII, do I need a chip. Ive looked through the forum and there seem to be some contradictions.

You see contradictions because things are constantly changing. Until very recently you needed a modchip to play backups. Now you can follow the softmodding guide here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/735325
