The wiikey seems to have occasional problems with the firmware being corrupted.
Your recovery disk may still work though. The recovery disk always shows up as unreadable, the way it works is you put it in and leave the wii on the main menu for 5 - 10 minutes. During this time nothing will appear to be happening, but (hopefully) the wiikey's firmware is being reinstalled.
If it still doesn't work after that then either a solder point came undone or the chip died.

Well, if you dont use the most recent recovery disk then you'll to upgrade the wiikey firmware again. But besides that theres nothing else you have to do.

Hi penguin98,
i have opened my wii to look at the wiikey, i have been on the wiikey site & printed the installation guide, on the guide the chip on the wiikey has wiikey printed on it, mine does not, but it look the same, now i have 3 wires coming from my wiikey( on the installation photo they are soldered under the numbers on the wiikey, not the wii http://www.wiikey.cn/downloads/legacy/installWiiKey.pdf )& the other ends are put togather & glued the the shell of the chip next to it, i can see that 1,2,3 & 4 (wiikey photo) are soldered

Ok, we should be able to figure this out. First off, your install job makes me pretty sure that you have a cut-legs D2B wii, which isnt a problem but it means its going to be hard to fit a new chip on it. Basically solder points 5 and 6 have been cut, so any chip that uses those points will have to solder directly to the traces of the legs on the drive chip.
Secondly, if you've played any first party nintendo games since super mario galaxy (this includes smash bros brawl and mario kart) then you dont have a wiikey clone. Clone chips result in error 001 when trying to play those games.

i have used mario kart (back up) & it was fine, looks like i might be able to re solder the 3 wires to the chip

Clone chips (well good ones that is) have never been a problem for me.
But only clone chips from reputable sources are good there are many clone chips that are just horrible.
Besides you could always get a clone chip and convert it to openwii so that you won't have any problems at all.
