I was going to attempt to do the x clamp mod after getting my 1st rrod on my ebay refurb model i picked up about 5 months ago. After removing the mobo I realized there are no x clamps in there and that the mod had already been done. I have a pic below of what the board looks like because there are some things I am not familiar with which I do not see in the tutorials online.
Since most of the work is done for me already I cleaned up the old compound and will be putting some arctic silver compound on and see what happens.
What are the sticky tapes on the chips for? Should I keep them?
Also, any clue on what the wire may be that seems to be sodered from one part to another and being held with electrical tape?
On another note my top 2 lights i believe they are 2 and 4. I keep it horizontal are always a constant red. I have not had any problems up until now. I was using the xbox for a long period of time yesterday and the game froze and i had the flashing reds.
just an update. after taking apart and cleaning the chips and putting new thermal compound it appears my rrod is gone and also the constant red lights are gone as well. all seems well so far.
That isn't a refurb. If it's from ebay, some just did an x clamp fix. A lot of sellers will do that. They'll get the console running just good enough to sell it. Then when it breaks down again, it's too late for the buyer.
i skimmed the post, but they prolly didnt know how to fix it, that happens alot too, so people will sell their mistakes, thinking they are un repairable.

funny thing is that it worked flawlessly for 1st 5 months even though there were 2 red lights which would stay on all the time. Since everything appeared to function fine I never went ahead and took out the board.
