So I was attempting to flash my lite on philips drive until i realized I didn't have the neccessary firmware/software and reassembled the xbox for the night. The next day I hook it back up to test and make sure it was still working. Now there are four flashing red lights unless the disc drive is removed. Once the cables are dissconnected from the disc drive the xbox will startup normally. Now there is a horrible burning smell after booting for 1-2 seconds. The smell seems to be coming from the slots on the back of the disc drive for the connections to the motherboard. Any ideas?

you may have plugged the power cable for the dvd drive in upside down. what were you using to power the drive? the xbox mobo or an xtractor/ck3?

More like you wrecked the whole console. You can't just swap in a new drive if you never got the key from the old drive.

sorry if i didnt explain clearly, but i didnt swap in a new drive... i simply plugged the initial one back in, reassembled the xbox and it gave me 4 rings until i remove the cables to the disc drive after which it starts up normally.

he meant unless u got the key off the current drive then u are screwed. so throw that box in the trash now cause that is what it is basically.

no problem, sorry things went this way for u. with electronics thats how it can be sometimes, one slip up can ruin everything with sesitive components. But lets hope this doesnt turn you away totally.

Yeah, unfortunately, it doesn't take much force to plug the power cable in upside down.

The only way to retreive your key would be to desolder the tsop and read it in a programmer.

I've dosoldered and read a lot of Sam's and Hit's, but the problem is you have the LO. The LO can not he read under normal means. There's another member here who has a dead LO board which I'm hoping they'll send to me. I'd like to get my hands on a dead board so I can see what else is possible.

Did you at least try to extract the keys?

I wouldn't throw the drive away if you haven't even tried.

Nope, havent tried getting the keys, dont really know how... i'm very new to this kinda thing, I do a nice bit of work with pc's but ive come to figure out modding isnt nearly as straightforward.

Easiest way is to buy a...

360Xtractor Pro + Spear

Or

CK3 (Connectivity Kit V3) + Probe

After you get 1 of the above you can then easily extract the keys from the drive if it is still working.

if you didnt know how then what were you trying to do in the first place, seeing as how that is the first step in flashing a console

sorry on the slow response but i was out of town for few days... i dunno if the drive will still eject as i am a tad nervous about plugging it back in with the burning smell, etc.

and as for retrieving the keys being the first step in modding the console, i was using textbooks guide and didnt see any mention of it for my benq mod which worked out fine without extracting the keys. So i foolishly assumed the lite on would be the same if not similar.

umm it is impossible to mod a system with new firmware unless u ge t the keys. and textbooks guide is written for just that purpose. i think u are misunderstanding what the entire process is doing

okay... i guess i did miss what the process is doing... all i know is i used iprep, loaded the firmware, created the bootable usb stick... booted off the usb stick, used the command to read, it asked for the xbox serial, then used the write command, it asked for the serial again... it wrote the new firmware (iextreme 1.5 BenQ) and now it plays backed up games...

so i guess i did miss the part where it extracted the key, must have been automated i guess.
