Does anyone know which editing software is best for editing vob/mpg files? A lot of editing software does not take these files...

A friend tivo'd a TV program, burned a DVD for me, and now I want to edit the file to eliminate commercials, etc.

The file on the DVD is a vob, but when I copy the file to my hard drive, I can simply change the extension name to .mpg. So - I now have these .mpg files.

Does anyone know what would be a good editing program that works with .mpg? It seems most editing programs do not handle this format.

Which edting software accept this file format ... and can also save in the .mpg format as well?

Thank you very much for your help.

Mpeg2cut is free and it works.

Videoredo works but it isn't free.

If I'm right, isn't TMPGEnc meant specifically for .mpg and .vob files? I could be wrong on this, though. I haven't worked with DVDs in years...

Anyway, that's my best bet. I believe you can do some video editing with that. (And what attar suggested as well.)

...additionally, you can also use VDubMod with Avisynth scripts, but... I doubt you need or want anything that complicated.

mpeg2cut and videoredo as recommended above are the best.

Videoredo has a commercial skip feature. I use videoredotvsuite to edit dvd movies directly making my rated r movies to pg13. Nothing beats frame accurate editing and no reencoding saving. If you edit a 2 hour mpeg, it'll take less than 5 minutes to save the finish file with no loss of quality.

There is also womble mpeg2vcr which is less expensive than videoredo, I also use it before to edit commercials before I discover videoredo. It's frame accurate and also saves without reencoding.

I tried mpeg2cut, but it was a complicated way of removing commercials. It works but it isn't easy to use. This would be a good program if you only do an occasional video every 2 or 3 months.
