I have the TOSHIBA - SAMSUNG DVD DRIVE ROM VER. MS25 for XBOX 360 and it has stopped reading any kind of dvds.

To make it simpler I made 2 videos showing the problem I have hoping maybe you could help me and tell me what is wrong with the drive and then if it has a solution try to fix it

In this video I show how I try to load a game but it just make some wierd noices and it just doesn't load instead it just keep spinning and after some time it sounds like it skips.

Video 1

In the second video I do the same thing but this time I take out the dvd

Video 2

I don't know how to explain what is it that is happening because of my little knowledge on dvd drives so I'm hoping one of you could help me with this problem.

Also I don't know why this happened because I my cousin was playing when I wasn't home and he just won't tell me what did he do.

If this isn't the right section please just tell me where to go or who should I ask and I'll head there right away.

Any questions please just let me know also.

Thanks!!

dvd drive is going bad probably. are you sure both cables are plugged into the dvd drive? if they are then you probably need to replace the dvd drive.

If by 2 cables you mean the sata and the power cable cables, yea, I'm sure they're connected correctly, otherwise the xbox wouldn't wither detect the drive or open the drive don't you think?

Thanks for trying though :D

the power is all that is needed to open the drive. it will open and close, and is detected by the xbox if its got just power.

thanks for trying though.

Yup you're right... I checked them again and still having the same problem...

I also noticed that the laser isn't strong enough as compared to other drives of the same brand I saw in youtube, can this be a reason for causing this problem?

My drive made some grinding noices before this started and while I was searching for a solution for the actual problem, I found out that there is something called worm motor that causes this kind of noices, and I was wondering if that has something to do with the xbox360 not reading the games?

you may need to follow the pot tweaking guide and see if that will help

Well, seeing what problems that guide fixes, I don't see my problem there, cause at this moment, my console doesn't even load a game, so there can't be any read errors, or dirty disc errors.
Maybe I didn't explain myself well, cause I had all those problem the guide fixes before, but right now the xbox360 doesn't even load a game.

I'm sorry if I'm not explaining this accourately, and thanks for trying to help mikeismad

then its still probably the laser. you can try to make the laser stronger, or dump your firmware on your computer and buy a new dvd drive and replace it.

I have found that finding the replacement drive on ebay (working of course) opening both drives and swapping the boards is a lot easier than dumping firmware. Especially if you can solder but your not to good at booting into boot disk and dumping files from your drive. You just need to make sure you keep the wires straight. The reason for swapping and dumping is that your drive is married to your mobo. So putting the old board from the broken drive into the new drive with the good laser will solve your problem. and it takes a total of about fifteen minutes start to finish.

It's a Samsung. Swapping the PCB does not require soldering.

I don't think that's the issue here though.

Edit: my guess would be a bad laser eye. The noise is the laser eye struggling to read the disc IMO. Try the pot tweak.

Edit2: The more I watch and listen to your videos, the more I am thinking something is out of whack. But it's hard to tell just from a video and not knowing the history on the drive. Without having it in my hands to check out for myself, the best I can say is try the pot tweak or replace the drive (at which point you could just swap your pcb from your old one into the new one as long as you get another samsung).

How do I tweak the pot, I'm clueless about that, if you could help me with that I might also give it a shot, thanks.

Well, all the issues that are listed on the link that mikeismad posted before, I had them all, dirty disc errors, kicked out in the middle of a game cause could not read errors, etc. So I'm guessing that's what you meant by history of the drive, if not, tell me.

I also found another issue this morning, I found out that the disc that was inside the xbox when all of this began, it has a strange mark on it. I'll upload a photo as soon as I get my hands on my camera. But it has about the same width as the size of the laser lens.

By history I mean what has it been doing. which you explained above.

Your laser is on it's way out. Try the pot tweak or replace the laser eye.

I tried the pot tweaking guide but still had the same problem so I just decided to buy a new drive...
So I have a new question, if my old drive had a ms25 FW and the one I bought is a samsung ms28, do I need to spoof or just replace the board from my ms25 to the ms28?
The ms25 drive has ixtreme on it, is that a problem at all?
I've been reading some post like this one, but I still don't know what to do...
Any help would be nice, thanks guys!

I replaced just the ms28 board to the ms25 drive and it works, but it doens't allow backup copies to play, just original games...
my question now is, Do I have to flash the fixed drive again?
cause the old one was working with ixtreme 1.4
