First off I have a good deal of experience with moding and searching Google for info so if you don't want to bother answering please at least give me a name or something that I could research on, now with that out of the way

I know that noob guides say that you need the key in order to install a different DVD drive to your 360 but I have completely destroyed my DVD drive (I cracked the board by mistake :(). It was a Lite-on drive and I was not able to dump the key or anything off of it. Because I don't have that original key is there any way possible to get my 360 back up and able to play games? I have a feeling that I will defiantly end up needing a mod chip (if I am wrong please correct me) so here are 2 that think have the best chance at working. The reason is because they claim to bypass the whole key checking process.

The first one is the "NME-360 2.0" http://www.modchipcentral.com/store/XBox...dchip-p-40.html but is says that it will not work with lite-on, now does this mean that it will not work with my 360 because it came with a lite on drive or does it just mean that I can't have a lite on drive installed. being as how I destroyed my old on I was planning on getting a different one I was thinking Samsung because it's the cheapest (I think).

I have also found this one "Globe 360 Version 2" http://www.modchipstore.com/globle-360-x...ks-o-16339.html this one looks promising because
"The Globe 360 Version 2 mod chip is plug and play, meaning that it does not require extracting the drive-key from the console because the ACTEL CPLD bypasses the Xbox 360 drive-key check, no lousy Firmware Hack Needed! It retains all original firmware and there's no need for any firmware-reading or flashing"
so does this mean that I can put in any 360 DVD drive (keep in mind that I don't have my key) and it will work, with out needing to do anything else as long as I boot up with the chip?

But after reading this http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=672696 I have a feeling that with out that key there is nothing I can do, if anyone else know otherwise please let me know.

Sorry if this post is confusing I kept on updating it every time I found something new during my hours of Google searching. So thanks in advance to anyone who helps me out

tl;dr

you need an infectus chip. it can read the keys from the xbox motherboard. but to use it i think you have to have a hackable kernel installed and im going to assume that the new 360s that have lite-ons have newer updates installed on them. and there is no rolling back I don't think because when they isntall updates they blow e-fuses and it prevents you from downgrading. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you are SOL. Don't feel bad though, I have a system with a dead lite-on but I sent it out to bhetrick and hes going to see what he can do with it, who knows, maybe he is a miracle worker and can save me and you both.

You are right about that kernel and ya mine is way to new to downgrade but I hope something will get worked out but both of them mod chips need the original key to work because the defiantly talk about not needing to deal with any of that, I am perfectly ok if I have to boot up with the chip on every time. I think XBL is not worth it and should be free. But that's Microsoft for ya trying to squeeze every last penny out of ya.

Thanks for the fast post btw :)

Isn't there something you can do where you remove a chip from the DVD board and send it to someone with a reader and they can rip the key? I'll see if I can find info, but I'm almost positive I've read about that here somewhere.

As for XBL being worth it, it's like $4.25 a month after avg sales tax, even less if you catch one of the many sales or promos online. (keep an eye on passwird.com) That's less than your average McDonald's burger. Hell, it's the new MS diet plan, eat one less burger a month, you lose a little weight AND get XBL, HAHA!

Yea please let me know about that because that would be awsome and deffenty sound like it could really happen thanks a lot

Now i am going to add to the sub topic of this thred, lol
The reason why i don't like XBL is because there is really no good reason to be changing for it, look at the PS3 everything about the internet is free on that one, i think MS does it because they know they can get away with it because if little timmy won't shut up to his parents about how he wants to play people online then his parents will open there wallets and pay for it...kinda makes you wonder what % of people that pay for XBL are just paying for someone else.

From what I've just read, desoldering the TSOP chip doesn't work on the Lite-ons, sorry.

As to our new subtopic, lol. I can see what you mean, but I'd almost rather have a cheap paid service over a free one. If it's generating its own revenue, it's more likely to have quality content generated for it, better service and upgrades over time too. also, nobody gives a service for free when it's proven to be something people will pay for. Sony's making their money off of their customers somewhere else is all, maybe even in the higher console prices. I don't know for sure where the added costs are since I don't have a PS3 to compare content purchase prices and such, but it takes money to run the servers, that's for sure.
