I have been asked to have a look at my friends wii as it freezes.
As soon as you start any game it freezes immediately and also occasionally when you go in to settings. Once frozen you have to hold power button til it goes off and restart it. There is no mod chip on it or homebrew yet, this i will install once it stops freezing....Any ideas please

back up all your saved games and reformat the wii

If theres been no modding to the wii then theres not likely much you can do to fix it. If its still under warranty send it off to nintendo for repair.

Reformatting, as quip13 suggested might also be worth a shot.

If it only froze when starting a game I'd guess that the drive was bad and replacing it may help, but if it also does it when you go to the settings then that makes a drive problem less likely.
