My girlfriends cousin's husband had a 360. I'm told it got the RROD and instead of sending it back to MS, the fool opened it up and tried to fix it. Since he is a fool he made it worse and then gave it to me.

Sadly, he butchered it. I do not have the clam shells, the box, nor do I have the TOP of the dvd drive. Thats right, the TOP of the drive.

My questions are:

1) I know I need the serial to have any chance in changing the drive, can I find the serial anywhere on the motherboard or such?

2) If I do find the serial, will I be able to get the firmware off the drive even thou it has no top?

Guess I can't edit anymore. Anyway, it appears that I can get the serial from the system blade/window. I'd just have to have my friend do the x-clamp trick to get it to boot.

So the only question remaining is the dvd drive.

You could tell what type of dvd drive you have in the 360 by looking at the tray and comparing it to pictures on the 'net and order a replacement drive and just switch the boards out. That might be alittle easier than flashing it.

Like the other person said, swapping out pcb boards is an option. But what you actually are going to need is the DVD key. That is obtained by dumping the firmware from the dvd drive. Having your DVD key is a little bit better than swapping out pcb boards. Reason being if you some how fry your pcb board or it just goes bad, at least you have your DVD key. Look at pictures of the dvd drive tray on the net and you will figure out what kind of drive you have. Once you have obtained the dvd key, you can flash it to the new drive.

On another note, did the gentleman ever fix the RROD of the console? If not if it hasn't been butchered too bad, there is a high chance of fixing the console.

Thanks for the replies.

I know how to flash a 360 and I'm pretty sure I could get the RROD fixed so again my question is:

Can you flash a dvd drive that has the TOP of the drive off? I mean the actual top so I see the laser and all the stuff. If yes then I would simply get the key off and buy a new drive.

Yes,you should be able to,I don't see how just having the top off of the drive could keep you from getting the information you need off of that drive.

Well, myself being all anal was thinking there was sensors and all that good stuff that could detect the lid being off and shut down ect ect. Yeah, I'm probably making something out of nothing. Thanks for helping me realize that.

How easy is it to swap a drive?

the serial of the console should be on a sticker on the motherboard. i have seen it on every unit i have taken apart so i know its there.

If you send me questions on Live about modding or anything related i will block you. Dont be an idiot.

I haven't flashed any drives so I can't tell you about that, but I have bought different drives and just switched the pci boards out. When I've had problems I always thought it would be best to buy a new drive and switch the boards, because I have had bad "brand new lasers" so I just don't take the chances anymore.

PCI board? I must say I've never heard of that option before. How easy is it? Do you have pictures showing where this PCI board is and what it takes to remove it?

1) You don't need the serial to change the drive. Changing the drive won't fix the rrod anyhow. Buy a busted drive off ebay for a new top. The serial is on the bottom of the mobo, on a white sticker with a barcode, unless he ripped it off.

2) You can dump the fw without a serial. Once you dump the fw, open the firmware with Toolbox. It'll tell you what model and version the drive is. Do this before you even buy a new drive.

Swapping boards means taking the board out of your old drive and putting it in the new one. You can only do this with the same model and version drive. So you still need to know what your drive is.

What does it take to remove and then put the PCB back on a new drive? We talking like screws, snug fit, or the dreaded solder?

Four phillip's head screws on the bottom of the drive to remove. Then lift off the bottom of the drive case. Then just a few ribbon cables to disconnect. They just pull out. Pop out the card and disconnect the laser ribbon cable.

Then just drop that card in to the new drive. But again, this will only work if the new drive is the same as the old one.

Well, that sounds very easy to do. Now I'm aware there are four brands of dvd drives and that the Hitachi has like 2 or 3 models but do the other three use only one model? I'm asking because say I go home and check the drive and its a benq. I shouldn't need to dump the firmware and check it because they only used one model right?

You need to dump the firmware of the BenQ to get the DVD Key. Once you have the DVD Key you can flash that key to any type of 360 drive that you choose. I'm guessing the BenQ drive probably has the newer firmware on it (64930). You will just need to buy a BenQ, Extract the DVD Key from Benq drive with no top, Flash that Key to the new Benq drive, and try it out in your 360. If you get some kind of error, the 360 was expecting the older firmware revision (62430). If that happens, simply load the firmware in Firmware Toolbox 4.8, and apply the spoof BenQ VAD6038-62430 to the firmware.

Ok, so I'm home and found out:

1) Machine turns on fine, no errors.

2) The dvd drive is a samsung.

3) The green power button keeps blinking and it says the tray is opening or closing. I can't get the tray to eject at all.

I googled the 3rd one and it seems to be an actual problem of drives dieing.

Anyway, I used iprep to make a usb so I could dump the drive but mtkflash couldn't find the drive. I tried all my sata ports but no luck. I've had no problem flashing benq's with my sata so I don't think thats the problem. I don't think it can be found because it's in a constant opening or closing cycle.

I guess at this point the best thing to do would be to swap out the pcb board with another samsung. Anyone got any ideas?

Ok, I tried using a hex editor on the mtkflash.exe but no luck. So, I took out the pcb board on on the back it's printed ts-h943a which tells me its the ms28 model. So I'm gonna not bother trying to dump the firmware and going to buy a replacement drive and swap the pcb boards.

That's a tough call if it's a Samsung.

Samsung's are notorious for their boards just dying. When is does, the result is the user will press the eject button, the green light flashes, the dash reads "opening", but the drive makes no attempt at all to open.

Sometimes it's only because of the gear belt slipping, not allowing the magnets to separate. But because your drive has no top, that can't be the case.

But because your drive has been dissambled prior to you getting it, other than the board being dead, it may also be that one of the ribbon cables was not properly plugged in.

You'll know soon enough after you get your new drive. If you swap that old board in to the new drive and have the same problem, then it's definately a dead board.

If it's dead, your only option is to remove the tsop and read it in a programmer to retreive your key. Then you can apply the key to your new board.

I've done quite a few of those now, and while it is a pain, it's a lot better than buying a whole new console.

I've unplugged and replugged the cables and inspected them to see if I could see any damage.

Here is my plan once I get the new drive. I will plug the new drive in and see if the mtkflash or dosflash can see it, if it can then I will exchange the pcb board. I will then again check to see if it can be seen. If yes then I'm very happy and if not, then I QQ.

If it really is the board, and you say you've extracted the dvd key from another method, would you be interested in doing it for me for a price?
