Say a person had a broken 360 hdd and wanted to upgrade it . Could that person just take apart the casing and install a new 500gb into it ?

yeah i looked around on it . whats the biggest harddrive you can put in it ? 500gb ? and finally my last question is , will you get banned from xbl ?

you can only put up to 120 gigs in it, and it has to be certain model. google wd1200bevs

Actually, you can use ANY western digital BEVS series drive now, regardless of size, but you'll only get either 20, 60, or 120 GB of storage depending on the hdss.bin file you inject when using hddhackr. I used a 160gb that I salvaged from a customer's fried notebook, and it's working fine as my new 120.

That's good to know if someone does happen to have a larger BEVS laying around.
I really hope they hack this puppy to allow larger HDDs and the ability to play games straight from the HDD without a game in.

its not possible and no one is even working on such a thing ... it's the xbox 360 itself which recognizes and identifies the amount of free space... as such it can never exceed the biggest "official" harddrive which is 120gb...
if microsoft releases a bigger harddrive then we can use bigger western digital drives in our systems... everything is tied to what microsoft does it's not about creating a new hack ...

Understandable.
That being said if the source on these boxes is ever leaked the ability to allow other HDD brands and sizes should be possible.
If the information concerning HDDs/DVD-ROMs hardware compatibility is hard-coded into some sort of ROM chip I could see this never being possible.
But saying that "If Microsoft "chooses" to release a larger HDD" then it is a software update/modification that may one day be exploited by someone.
I really wish I understood more of what's going on inside these machines. I guess that's why I don't work for Microsoft. :-(
