Ok, so here's the situation. I paid someone to mod my Wii. He said he put in the Wiikey v2.

I initially burned a backup of Metroid Prime onto a Memorex dvd-r. The first time it didn't work, but I got it to work the second time I burned it. Then I went on vacation for a couple of weeks and when I tried to play the game again, it froze right when I clicked to load the game. After I unplugged the Wii and plugged it back in, it wouldn't read the disc. I assumed it was because of the crappy media.

I bought some Verbatim dvd-rs and burned Metroid Prime again. It didn't work. I took the Wii back to the guy who modded it. He plugged it in and tried a few games I had burned. They all worked. He explained that sometimes the drive needs to be reset by unplugging the Wii for 5-10 minutes.

I got back home and played No More Heroes. After about 20 minutes, the game froze. I restarted the Wii, but it wouldn't read the game. I had to unplug the Wii for 5 minutes and when I plugged it back in, it worked again. But after another 20 minutes of playing, it froze again. The same thing happened when I tried playing a backup of Rygar.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? I have burned using Nero and Imgburn and burned the games at 4x. Could it be the media? I almost think maybe the Wii is overheating.

I am not sure. But why do you burn at 4x rather than full speed . The newer loaders support full speed burning. Maybe try cleaning the discs, cleaning the wii drive. Perhaps more knowledgeable people will chip in.

I've burned as fast as 8x, but I have gotten the same results. How do I clean the Wii drive?

Thanks for your help.

Burn at a slower speed around 2.4x I recomend as you will get read write errors at fast speeds, also change the media I recomend Sony DVD-R's, you might want to also check into the guy that installed it if other people have had issues with there chips then he maybe bad at installing them.

Are the ISO's your burning correct for your region?

I don't even think my dvd burner supports speeds less than 4x. I'll check on that.

I am actually going to buy some Sony dvd-rs today to see if that will help.

I did meet up with the installer, but he said the only other time a customer of his has had problems it was determined that it was the media he was using. He said his modding is top notch.

I have been using NTSC backups, but should that matter? I thought the Wiikey could play games from other regions as well.

Definately not good advice. 2.4x was for the 90's. And Sony dvd's are not good at all. You were using the best dvd's already.

If it was working fine before, looks like your friend ruined your wii or you have a bad install/chip. You should have just used the softmod. N

Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of the soft mod before getting the chip installed.

If it is a bad install and I do the soft mod now, if I use the boot loader, do you think I would have a better chance of getting games to play? Do you think the boot loader would bypass the mod chip from working?

Try it out there's no harm in trying, also 2.4x speed is fine to use I don't know why everyone is suddenly become impatient over the years maybe I've go old but you all do realise that's the recommended speed to burn at anyway it maybe the 90's but it still works so why has it become wrong that's like saying Windows doesn't run over dos because DOS is from the 80's.

I've been doing this for years we will get you up and running again.

I just thought the game runs faster if you burn at higher speeds. Incidentally my dvd writer seems to be screwed lol. It is old though. Softchip seems to work very well . I have been doing this 5 mins or a few months lol.

I did the soft mod tonight. I wish I had known about this before having the chip put in.

I bought some Sony dvd-rs and burned Zelda on it and the Wii read it. So I was thinking maybe it was a media issue. But I went ahead and did the soft mod and in the process, you have to reset the Wii a few times, and during one of the resets, the Wii stopped reading the burned game again. So I finished the process and installed the Wiigator boot loader. Lo and behold, it booted up even though the Wii was not reading the disc when I went to the disc channel!

I did not have a chance to play the game to see if it would freeze on me, but I am confident. Hopefully it works out. I'm already out the $100 from modding the Wii. Oh well.

The Wii drive and mod chip you use determines the speed that it reads at, Wii's max read speed is about 6x when you burn at lower speeds you get less chance of file skipping, basically a good consistent data transfer rather than maxing out your burner and then it slows and speeds up again, that's when issues start if you select a speed like 2.4x that's the speed the drive keeps to thus decreasing the chances of a bad burn.

Is your Wiikey the latest firmware btw?
