Is it now okay to install Homebrew and softmod the Wii with the 3.4 firmware? I looked through a lot of these threads and they say you need to downgrade to 3.2 or so, but are those threads outdated? I see other threads saying that with Wiigator gamma you can do 3.4? So what is accurate? My Wii will be here tomorrow and I'm not sure what firmware it'll have, and if I should update to 3.4 if it has lower or leave it. I started downloading the needed files and it had two folders, a 3.3 and 3.4 folder. Does that mean I can use either of those firmware versions without a problem?
I've been reading over the guides here and here for awhile trying to better understand everything so I'm ready to do this when my Wii comes tomorrow.
So as I understand, there is no difficulty or problems installing Homebrew Channel on a Wii with 3.4 Firmware, its just that with 3.4 you aren't able to install WAD's?
So if I follow the instructions here, I'll have 3.4 and be able to play backups? That's ideally what I want. I've heard that downgrading your firmware has a small chance of bricking the Wii, I'd prefer to have the latest versions. What is the difference between IOS and cIOS? This part is the one that's confusing me.
yes, and no
you can sucessfully install the homebrew channel and run homebrew apps,
but...
you cannot install cios, which is necessary to run backups. If you try to run a backup, you will get a DVD error
ios is basically the operating system, and cios is the custom ios
but if you follow this video and download the files from the description, you should be fine.

WRONG! Downgrading is not necessary. If he follows the first 3 steps of that guide to install IOS16 then he'll be fine. cIOS's will install and backups will work. No downgrading necessary.
