I might get a 360 and I was wondering if it's really all that necessary to get a Pro as opposed to an Arcade model if you only plan to game offline? Playing backups will get you banned on Xbox Live and there are added costs with the Wireless adapter and Xbox Live Gold membership. So I'd rather just stick with offline gaming and I'd imagine that the 512 MB flash memory you get with Arcade would be good enough for offline needs like game saves? Thanks.

it really all depends. some games take up a lot of hard drive space. some games make it so you can save certain things like paint schemes and car tunes, and things like that and they take up a lot of space. im sure you can get by though.

installing games to the HD is such an insanely good feature i dunno how you could pass it up... for some games its a SERIOUS performance increase ...

if you get the arcade model you should look into getting a 120GB hd somehow... there are some do it yourself tutorials which explain how to buy a drive off ebay and install it into a plastic enclosure... which is cheaper than buying it the official microsoft way

I know on a modded/soft-modded PS2 you can use a homebrew app to transfer memory card data onto a USB stick and vice versa. I've never needed to use more than one memory card because of this. Are you allowed to use similar tricks with the flash memory on a modified 360?

Donaldo: So there is a way to actually use a regular non-M$ HD with your 360? I have a 1 TB ext HDD and an older 250 GB ext. Can either work?

Neither of those will work. It needs to be a western digital BEVS series 2.5" notebook SATA hdd. Any size drive from that family will work with the hddhackr program, but you will only get a max of 120 since it's all the 360 can handle.

Like this?

So that's $53.60 CDN + shipping + external enclosure.

In the end the drive + enclosure + arcade is probably almost the price of a Pro console.

u will need to put it into a xbox 360 HDD shell not just any enclosure in order to use like a 360 hdd for game saves and such. it plugs into the top of the 360 the same as a regular one.

so u cant just get any usb enclosure and plug in to a usb port on 360....u could do this but it wouldnt work for game saves or content or anything. u could only play music/videos from a usb external.

If you send me questions on Live about modding or anything related i will block you. Dont be an idiot.

That's the right drive to use, Inagasaki, but blow the extra $20 on a broken hdd from ebay so you have the shell like Stealthdf said. I just got one for 15, thinking the hdd inside was bad. Turns out that the plug was cracked so it wasn't interfacing with the 360 properly. A little superglue and I had a perfectly working 20GB drive! I sold it to a buddy who needed it and just cracked my original hdd shell instead.

and looking at it as its the same price as the pro isn't the right way to look at it. your getting an elite, minus the black shell for the same price as a pro. which comes with half the hard drive capacity.

I read up more on the 360 and apparently the free Xbox Live Silver account does allow you to download DLC, Xbox Live Arcade games, demos, etc. I didn't think Silver would allow me to do these things. I don't care much for online multi-player anyway but DLC is a good bonus not to pass up I guess.

Considering the bonuses of Live, it may be best if I just pass on getting flashed firmware and actually buy the games. lol. I'm aware of the Stealth Patches but what if M$ is able to detect it in the future? And even now there are no guarantees you won't get caught. I'd be really pissed off if my box got banned after all that investment and effort. And I don't plan on buying two 360s. Before I started modding consoles with the PS1, I used to just buy used games or (better yet if I can find them) new retail games for bargain prices so I might just do that with the 360. Thankfully the game publishers haven't bribed their way to get politicians to ban used games yet (which is absolutely bogus. "Let's ban used games, they hurt game developers!" is just as stupid as saying "Let's ban used cars, they hurt GM and Ford!")

I assume that SONY's PSN is going to be just as anal when the PS3 is moddable to play backups so I suppose it's best I go with M$ in this generation since the Wii does not interest me. My only concern is the RRoD and I don't like the fact that I'd have to physically take my modem and cables with me to the basement (I don't have a TV on the same floor as my computer) and set them up every time I want to use Xbox Live unless I feel like shelling out $100 for an adapter. But I might as well I guess.

I have the Arcade version and am perfectly good with it. Bought me a 20 Gig harddrive off ebay from a Hongkong seller for like 20 Euros, that's all I need.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.
